A maths curriculum you can teach from tomorrow morning

Eighty interactive lessons in teaching order, sorted into Year 3, Year 4, Year 5, Year 6 and the work that comes after the papers. You open the next lesson, teach from the worked example on the screen, and your child practises underneath it. There is nothing to plan the night before and nothing to print.

The scheme of work

Eighty lessons, laid out by school year

Every lesson sits in the school year the National Curriculum first teaches it. Find your child, start there, and work up to the papers in May of Year 6. Open a year to read every lesson inside it.

The numbers are teaching-order positions in the course, so a year is not one unbroken run. Year groups are a guide, not a gate: if you are not sure, start a year below and move up quickly.

Coverage, honestly

Where this sits against the National Curriculum

Sixty-four of the eighty lessons sit on the National Curriculum for Key Stage 2. Each one is placed in the school year the curriculum first teaches that content, which is what the ladder above is showing you. Place value, the four operations, fractions, decimals, percentages, ratio, measurement, geometry, statistics and the start of algebra are all covered.

The other sixteen, which come with the full course, are not in the Key Stage 2 programme of study and are never assessed by the papers: percentage change, collecting and expanding terms, two-step equations, trapezia, surface area, mode median and range, Venn diagrams, probability, speed and binary. They run in their own order and are meant for after the papers, or for a child who is ready to push on into Year 7 work.

The Key Stage 2 lessons are taught with harder questions than a school scheme usually sets, because the course was written for children being stretched. Every lesson has gentler levels inside it, so you can stay at that end if your child needs to.

This is a maths teacher’s own scheme of work, mapped onto the school years. It is not published by a curriculum body and it is not an accredited course.

How a lesson runs

Four steps, every time

The routine does not change from lesson to lesson. Once you have done one, you have done all eighty.

Find the year, open the first lesson

Use the ladder above. If your child sits between two years, start at the lower one. A lesson is twenty to thirty minutes, so a repeated week costs you almost nothing.

Read the worked example out loud

The method appears one line at a time as you click. You are reading what is on the screen and asking your child the question at the end of each line.

Let them do the practice on paper

They work the questions in an exercise book, then click each answer to reveal it and check it against their own working.

Tick it off and pick up the next one

The free progress tracker lists all eighty lessons in order, so the tick sheet becomes your record of what you covered this year.
