About this lesson

By the end of this lesson your child can read and write any Roman numeral up to 1,000, whether it is a plain addition like XXVII, a subtractive pair like XL, or a full year like MCMXCV. The seven letters are quick to learn. What catches children out is the moment a 4 or a 9 appears and the rules change.

Topics covered:

  • The seven symbols and what each one is worth, from I to M
  • Building numbers by adding, for example XXVII is 27
  • The six subtractive pairs, IV, IX, XL, XC, CD and CM
  • Numbers to 1,000 and reading years, for example MCMXCV is 1995
  • Puzzles and problems, including calculations written in numerals and Roman clock faces

Your child works through this lesson on any screen. They click to reveal each line of a worked example, try the practice questions on paper, then click to check their own answer. Three of the pages are interactive builders rather than question grids, where they click or type letters and watch the value change, and the builder tells them straight away when a string breaks one of the rules.

How it's structured:

  • Each unit opens with a worked example your child clicks through line by line, then 12 practice questions colour coded easy, medium and hard
  • 90 questions in total, each with a click-to-reveal answer and a reveal-all option
  • A final 20-question mixed challenge pulling from all 5 units, the way Roman numerals actually turn up on an exam paper

The rule most worksheets skip. Children learn that a smaller letter in front means take it away, and then write 99 as IC and 45 as VL. Only I, X and C are ever taken away, and only from the next two letters up the ladder. This lesson teaches the six pairs as one fixed set, then gives your child the questions that catch the mistake, so the rule sticks.

Use this if:

  • Your child is in Year 3 to Year 7 and meets Roman numerals in the KS2 curriculum
  • You are preparing for the 11+, where Roman numerals come up as quick marks worth taking
  • Your child can name the letters but gets stuck the moment a 4 or a 9 appears
  • You want a resource your child can check their own work with, not one more thing on your to-do list

FAQs

How do I access the lesson?

You'll get an email with your lesson link as soon as payment goes through. Click it to open the lesson in any browser, no login and no app to install.

How does the marking work?

There's no typing answers into a box. Your child works it out on paper, then clicks to reveal the correct answer and checks their own work. Full working is shown too, not just the final answer, so mistakes are easy to spot.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

It works best on a tablet or laptop, where there's more room to read the examples and questions. It'll open on a phone too, but the text and diagrams can feel quite small on a smaller screen.

Can I use the lesson more than once?

Yes. There's no limit on how many times you open the link, so it's there for revision right up to the exam.

What if I lose the link or don't get the email?

Email info@shlc-tutor.co.uk and we'll resend it straight away.
