Forming and Solving Equations Mastery
An interactive lesson on screen. Your child works through worked examples, practises on their own, then tests themselves with questions that get harder as they go.
About this lesson
By the end of this lesson your child can take any worded problem, shape question or age puzzle, turn it into an equation, and solve it step by step. Forming the equation is the skill examiners actually test. Solving it is the easy part.
Topics covered:
- Creating expressions from words, for example "three times a number, plus 4"
- Forming and solving equations from number puzzles
- Shape and angle equations, perimeters, triangles, quadrilaterals, angles on a line and around a point
- Age problems, for example "in 3 years she will be twice as old as she was 5 years ago"
- Trickier multi-step word problems
Your child clicks through each worked example one line at a time, works the practice questions on paper, then clicks to check each answer. Shape questions come with accurate diagrams, so what your child sees matches what the exam paper will show.
How it's structured:
- Each unit opens with worked examples revealed line by line, followed by practice questions colour-coded easy, medium and hard, plus a Key Facts check on the angle rules before the shape unit
- 80 questions in total, every answer hidden behind click-to-reveal, with a Reveal All button for checking a full page at speed
- Finishes with a 20-question mixed challenge drawing on all 5 units
Most practice hands your child the equation ready-made. Exam questions never do. Every question here starts from words or a diagram, so your child gets the translation practice the papers demand.
Use this if:
- Your child is in Year 4 to Year 11 and algebra word problems cost them marks
- You are preparing for the 11+ and want forming equations secure before exam season
- Your child is on the GCSE Foundation route and needs the "form and solve" question type nailed
- You want a resource your child can check their own work with, not one more thing on your to-do list

FAQs
How do I access the lesson?
You'll get an email with your lesson link as soon as payment goes through. Click it to open the lesson in any browser, no login and no app to install.
How does the marking work?
There's no typing answers into a box. Your child works it out on paper, then clicks to reveal the correct answer and checks their own work. Full working is shown too, not just the final answer, so mistakes are easy to spot.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
It works best on a tablet or laptop, where there's more room to read the examples and questions. It'll open on a phone too, but the text and diagrams can feel quite small on a smaller screen.
Can I use the lesson more than once?
Yes. There's no limit on how many times you open the link, so it's there for revision right up to the exam.
What if I lose the link or don't get the email?
