Feedback on your child's own writing
When we mark English, the comments go on the paper itself, question by question.

11+ English, Year 4 to Year 6
We teach 11+ English in two parts. Your child learns a method for each type of comprehension and verbal reasoning question, so they stop guessing when the clock is running.
They also build their creative writing sentence by sentence, using the techniques that make a marker stop and read properly.
Our English teachers have prepared pupils who went on to win places at selective schools, including Heckmondwike Grammar School.

Starting in Year 9 or Year 10 gives your child time to fix the basics before GCSE analysis gets harder.

How lessons run
The first lesson is an assessment. The teacher works out what your child can and cannot do yet, because the topic a child arrives with is often not the one holding them back.
Each lesson after that has one focus, set by what the assessment found and by your child's exam.
Your child gets written feedback on their own work and a target for the next lesson.
You get written updates on what was taught and what comes next, and a progress report each month.

Nargis Akhtar
English teacher with a first class degree in English studies, based in Newcastle. In school she has run intervention groups for pupils falling behind and for pupils aiming at grades 8 and 9, and she goes to exam board conferences each year. She teaches 11+ comprehension and writing, and GCSE English.

What year should my child start English tuition?
For the 11+, most families start in Year 4 or Year 5, which leaves time to build comprehension and writing before the exam. For GCSE, starting in Year 9 or Year 10 gives your child time to secure the basics before the analysis gets harder. Each lesson then builds on the last one instead of catching up.
Do you teach GCSE English Language and English Literature?
Yes. Lessons can focus on either or both, depending on where your child is losing marks.
Which exam boards do you teach?
We teach to the board your child's school uses, working from its published mark schemes. Henna marks GCSE English for AQA.
Can you help with 11+ creative writing?
