Where science marks go
Students who know the science still drop marks on keywords, method detail and misread data.

Lessons work on the same habits, such as using the word the mark scheme wants, finishing a method with every step, and reading a graph or equation twice before using it.

Start in Year 9 or Year 10
GCSE science builds on KS3, so a gap in an early topic makes the later topics that use it harder. Starting in Year 9 or Year 10 gives your child time to fix those gaps as they appear, and leaves Year 11 for exam practice.
Waleed's long-term GCSE students most often move from grade 6 or 7 to grade 9 over about 18 months. That figure comes from his own long-term students, and results vary from child to child.

How lessons run
The first lesson is an assessment. Waleed works out what your child can and cannot do yet, because the topic a child arrives with is often not the one holding them back.
Each lesson after that has one focus, set by what the assessment found and by your child's exam.
Your child gets written feedback on their own work and a target for the next lesson.
You get written updates on what was taught and what comes next, and a progress report each month.

Waleed Zulfiqar
Waleed has taught science in UK schools for over ten years, including several years as Head of Science. He has a Master's degree in Science and a second in Education.
In private tuition he works with students from independent, grammar and state schools. Many of them are capable already and need sharper exam technique, a firmer grasp of the ideas, or a teacher who will push them. He tells parents plainly where their child stands.

What year should my child start GCSE science tuition?
Year 9 or Year 10 suits most students. Your child has time to fix gaps from KS3 before the GCSE content builds on them. Students who start in Year 11 can still improve, but more of each lesson goes on exam questions.
