About this lesson
By the end of this lesson your child can find every factor of a number without missing one, tell a factor from a multiple instantly, and find the pair of numbers that multiplies to one total and adds to another. That last skill is the one that quadratic factorising rests on at GCSE, and it is built here from the ground up, positives first and then negatives.
Topics covered:
- Recognising multiples, and building times tables nobody learns, 13, 17, 18, 19 and beyond
- Divisibility tests for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10, and combining them for bigger numbers
- Finding every factor of a number using factor pairs, and knowing when to stop
- Finding two numbers with a given product and sum, for example product 20 and sum 9
- The same skill with negative pairs, for example product 20 and sum −9

The mistake this lesson is built to stop. Most children list factors in whatever order they think of them, which is why they miss one and lose the mark.
