About this lesson
By the end of this lesson your child can break any number down into the primes that multiply to make it, decide whether a number is prime without guessing, and use a Venn diagram to find the HCF and LCM of two numbers far too big to list the factors of. Prime factorisation is the skill that quietly sits underneath HCF, LCM, surds and simplifying at GCSE, and it is built here from what a prime actually is.
Topics covered:
- What makes a number prime, exactly two different factors, and why 1 does not count
- Finding the primes with a sieve, then testing a bigger number like 91 that looks prime and is not
- Factor trees, splitting a number all the way down until every branch ends on a prime
- Index form, writing 360 as 2³ × 3² × 5
- HCF and LCM from prime factors, using a Venn diagram to sort the shared primes from the rest
Your child works through this lesson on any screen. They click to reveal each step of a worked example, try the practice questions on paper, then click to check their own answer.
How it's structured:
- Each unit opens with a worked example clicked through line by line, followed by practice questions colour-coded easy, medium and hard
- 68 questions in total, every one click-to-reveal with a reveal-all option, plus a New Questions button that deals a fresh set each time
- A final 20-question mixed challenge pulling from all four units, plus 4 hands-on Explore tools built into the lesson
The mistake this lesson is built to stop. When children put prime factors into a Venn diagram they drop every shared prime into the middle. If 144 has four 2s and 180 has two, only two of them are shared and the spare pair stays in the 144 circle. Get that wrong and the HCF and the LCM are both wrong. This lesson drops the primes into the diagram one at a time so your child can see exactly how many are shared.
Use this if:
- Your child is in Year 5 to Year 11 and needs primes and prime factorisation to become automatic
- You're preparing for the 11+, where prime numbers and factor questions come up every year
- Your child is doing GCSE Foundation and needs product of primes, HCF and LCM secure
- You want a resource your child can check their own work with, not one more thing on your to-do list

FAQs
How do I access the lesson?
You'll get an email with your lesson link as soon as payment goes through. Click it to open the lesson in any browser, no login and no app to install.
How does the marking work?
There's no typing answers into a box. Your child works it out on paper, then clicks to reveal the correct answer and checks their own work. Full working is shown too, not just the final answer, so mistakes are easy to spot.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
It works best on a tablet or laptop, where there's more room to read the examples and questions. It'll open on a phone too, but the text and diagrams can feel quite small on a smaller screen.
Can I use the lesson more than once?
Yes. There's no limit on how many times you open the link, so it's there for revision right up to the exam.
What if I lose the link or don't get the email?
