About this lesson
By the end of this lesson your child can read, write and compare any number up to a billion, say what each digit is worth, split a nine-digit number at both of its commas, and know why four hundred million and six is 400,000,006 and not 400,000,600. A second comma changes the job. A child who has only ever read one group of three digits now has to read three groups, in the right order, without losing count of the zeros.

Five tools a printed worksheet cannot give you. A counter table running all the way out to the millions column, with plus one, plus ten, right through to plus one million, so ten counters in one column visibly swap for a single counter of the next. Shutters that cover any of the three groups in turn, so your child reads a nine-digit number in parts instead of one long string of digits. A number line paired with a seven-wheel odometer, where adding one hundred thousand to 9,900,000 rolls the wheels over into ten million. A Gattegno chart with a row for every power of ten from one to nine hundred million, tapped one cell per row to build a nine-digit number and read it back. And a digit card builder with nine cards, for making the biggest and smallest nine-digit number, ordering real population figures, and counting the last steps up to a billion.
