About this lesson
By the end of this lesson your child can read any pie chart as a fraction, a percentage or an angle, draw one from a frequency table, and compare two charts without falling for the bigger slice trap. Pie charts turn up on almost every 11+ paper and on GCSE Foundation, and the marks usually go the same way, reading the picture instead of the total, or assuming the chart with the bigger slice must have more children in it.
Topics covered:
- Reading a pie chart as a fraction, counting the equal parts, naming the share and simplifying it
- Using a stated total, finding how many the sector is worth by taking that fraction of the total
- Percentage labels, reading them off, adding them to check the chart makes 100 and finding the one that has been rubbed out
- Angles, sharing 360° between the whole set so one item is worth a fixed number of degrees, then going both ways between an angle and a count
- Drawing a pie chart from a frequency table, working out every angle, marking each spoke and checking the last sector closes the circle at 360°
- Comparing two pie charts, where a bigger share of a smaller group can still be fewer children, so the totals decide it and not the picture

Angle Wheel sets a target such as 12 people out of 36 and turns until the sector matches, showing 360 ÷ 36 = 10° for one person as it goes.
