The 11+ is not harder school maths
It asks children to apply what they know to a question worded in a way they have never seen, at speed, with no one to ask.
Most children who struggle are not weak at maths. They freeze when the question looks unfamiliar. So we build in order. Secure the number work first, then teach how to read an unfamiliar question and choose a method, then add the clock.

A normal week looks like

Foundations, then reasoning, then the clock
In that order, every time. Skipping ahead is what produces guessers.
Build the foundations
Fractions, ratio, place value and times tables, checked one by one before we move on. Gaps here show up as careless mistakes later. There are interactive mastery lessons on each of these topics if you want extra practice at home.
Develop the reasoning
Unfamiliar wording, multi step problems and non verbal reasoning. We teach how to spot what a question is really asking before choosing a method. Free practice between lessons on Shape Sleuth and the cube nets visualiser.
Prepare under timed conditions
Full papers, timed, with a strategy for what to skip and when to come back. We work from the 11+ practice papers with solutions so every mistake gets explained.

The order that works
A Year 5 running up to an autumn exam, planned two ways.
The second plan produces a child who is fast and still guessing. Nothing underneath it has changed, so the score stops moving by about week six.

What we look at first
Before any paper gets timed.
Can they read a question they have never seen before and choose a method without being asked a leading question? The check that predicts an offer better than any practice score
If the answer is no, more papers will not fix it. That is the work of the first term, and it is why we start with a readiness check.
