About this lesson
By the end of this lesson your child can work out the area of any square, rectangle or triangle, spot when a length on the diagram is a trap, and work backwards from an area to find a missing side.
Topics covered:
- Counting area on grids, including shapes that are not full rectangles
- Area of squares and rectangles, including mixed units such as 1.5m by 60cm
- Finding a missing side length from the area, including square numbers and two-digit division
- Area of triangles, including right-angled and obtuse triangles
- Finding a missing base or height when the area is given, for example area 64cm² where the height is twice the base
- Worded and reasoning problems, for example finding both sides from an area and a perimeter
Every worked example is revealed one line at a time, so your child watches the method build up rather than staring at a finished solution. They try each question on paper, then click to check.

The mistake that costs the most marks is using a slanted side as the height. Several questions deliberately label an extra sloping length, so your child has to work out which measurement the formula actually needs instead of multiplying the first two numbers on the diagram.
