About this lesson
By the end of this lesson your child can take any percentage change question, adding an increase, taking a discount off, or working out the percentage a price rose by, and know instantly which number counts as the whole. Percentage change is where 11+ and GCSE Foundation marks are lost quietly, because the arithmetic is easy and the decision about what to divide by is not.
Topics covered:
- Increasing an amount by a percentage, both by adding the change on and by finding the new percentage in one step
- Decreasing an amount, including sale wording like 20% off, and choosing whichever route is fewer steps
- Writing one amount as a percentage of another, including when the units differ, for example 40p out of £2.50
- Multi-step problems, successive changes, best buys, and taking a percentage of what is left
- Percentage change, comparing the change with the original amount and never with the new one
Your child works through this lesson on any screen. They click to reveal each line of a worked example, try the practice questions on paper, then click to check their own answer. Every worked example and every question set redeals on a button press, so the lesson does not run out after one sitting, and three hands-on tools let them step through a change one part at a time.
How it's structured:
- Each of the 5 units opens with two worked examples your child clicks through line by line, then practice questions colour-coded easy, medium and hard
- 90 questions in total, each with a click-to-reveal answer and a reveal-all option per section
- A final 20-question mixed challenge pulling from all 5 units, the way these questions actually arrive on an exam paper
Two routes, taught side by side. Increasing £70 by 20% and finding 120% of £70 land on the same answer, and a child who knows both can pick whichever is shorter. It matters most on a decrease, where taking 75% off is one calculation and the long way round is three. This lesson teaches both routes on the same numbers and gives a rule for choosing between them. It also drills the error that costs the most marks, dividing a change by the new amount instead of by the amount you started with.
Use this if:
- Your child is in Year 4 to Year 11 and percentage questions are still slow or hit and miss
- You are preparing for the 11+, where increase, decrease and percentage change appear every year
- Your child is doing GCSE Foundation and keeps dividing by the wrong number on percentage change
- You want a resource your child can check their own work with, not one more thing on your to-do list

Aadam, the tutor has a lovely mannerism and has made my daughter feel at ease. He explains the question in a way that she understands and is patient with her. She has already seen the results at school from his help and has gone up two GCSE grades in a short period of time.P. Flower · December 2024

FAQs
How do I access the lesson?
You'll get an email with your lesson link as soon as payment goes through. Click it to open the lesson in any browser, no login and no app to install.
How does the marking work?
There's no typing answers into a box. Your child works it out on paper, then clicks to reveal the correct answer and checks their own work. Full working is shown too, not just the final answer, so mistakes are easy to spot.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
It works best on a tablet or laptop, where there's more room to read the examples and questions. It'll open on a phone too, but the text and diagrams can feel quite small on a smaller screen.
Can I use the lesson more than once?
Yes. There's no limit on how many times you open the link, so it's there for revision right up to the exam.
What if I lose the link or don't get the email?
