About this lesson
By the end of this lesson your child can take any ratio question, whether it gives them the total, one person's share, or only the difference between two shares, and work it out with the same four steps.
Share £96 in the ratio 3:5. There are 12 more girls than boys. Those look like two different topics, and most children learn a separate trick for each, then freeze when the wording shifts again. This lesson teaches one method and works it through all five question types.
Topics covered:
- Sharing a quantity in a 2-part ratio, for example sharing £96 between two people in the ratio 3:5
- Sharing in a 3-part ratio, including questions that ask only for the largest or the smallest share
- Difference problems, where the question gives the gap instead of the total, for example 12 more girls than boys
- Forming ratios from context, including "three times as many" wording, fractions and remainders
- Multi-step and changing ratios, where amounts are added, removed or spent after the sharing is done
