What Year 4 covers
- Place value in four digit numbers, and rounding to the nearest 10, 100 and 1,000
- Every times table to 12 x 12, and short multiplication in a formal written layout
- Decimals to two places, and dividing by 10 and 100
- Counting back through zero into negative numbers
- Perimeter of rectilinear shapes, and finding area by counting squares
- Coordinates in the first quadrant, translations, and lines of symmetry
- Converting units of measure, and the 12 and 24 hour clock
- Reading Roman numerals to 100
The Key Stage 2 tests are sat in the May of Year 6, so a Year 4 child has 2 more school years before the papers. Everything here is groundwork the later years lean on.

Questions about Year 4
Is Year 4 the right start for a child aged 8 or 9?
Usually. Age is the starting guess and the free questions are the check. If your child finds the first two lessons easy, move up a year. If they struggle with the first one, drop back to Year 3.
How long does Year 4 take?
16 lessons at two a week is about 8 weeks, and most families spread it over a term or more, because each lesson holds more questions than one sitting needs. Stop a lesson once it has landed and pick up the next.
What comes after Year 4?
Year 5: Numbers to 1,000,000, long multiplication and short division, factors, primes, squares and cubes, thousandths, estimating by rounding, the per cent symbol and the area of rectangles.

Lesson numbers are positions in the teaching order, so a year's lessons are not one unbroken run. This is a maths teacher's own scheme of work mapped onto the school years, not an accredited course.
