What non-verbal reasoning actually tests, and how to prepare for it
Non-verbal reasoning is the part of the 11+ that worries parents most, because it does not look like anything taught at school. There is no syllabus to revise and no obvious way to help. It is, however, one of the most trainable sections of the whole exam, and the reason is that it runs on a small and repeating set of question types.
Why schools use it at all
NVR is meant to measure reasoning with as little dependence on reading level and prior teaching as possible. That is why it appears in selective tests: a child who has had less exposure to formal English can still show their thinking.
In practice the design goal is only partly met. Familiarity with the question formats makes a substantial difference, which is why a child who has never seen these puzzles can score badly on a first attempt and much better three weeks later without becoming any more intelligent in the meantime.
The question types worth recognising

The features being tested are almost always drawn from the same short list: number of sides, shading, size, rotation, reflection, line style, position and count. Teaching a child to run through that list deliberately turns a guessing game into a method.
How to practise it properly
Untimed first. NVR under a clock before the patterns are familiar produces panic and random guessing, and random guessing is a habit that survives into the real test.
When an answer is wrong, do not simply give the right one. Ask which feature they were tracking. Almost every NVR error is a child who spotted a real pattern that was not the one the question was about, and naming that is far more useful than the correct letter.
Twenty minutes twice a week is plenty. NVR improves quickly and then plateaus, so a heavy programme is wasted effort that would be better spent on maths and English.
Where it fits in the wider 11+ picture
NVR usually carries less weight than maths and English in a school's overall score, and it is the fastest section to improve. That combination makes it a good early win with an anxious child, and a bad place to spend the last two months.

Questions parents ask
Is non-verbal reasoning a measure of intelligence?
It is designed to correlate with reasoning ability, but a score on a first attempt mostly measures familiarity with the format. That gap closes with practice, which is exactly why practice is worth doing.
Do not treat an early low score as information about your child's ability. Treat it as information about their exposure.
Which schools test NVR?
Most GL Assessment based grammar school tests include verbal and non-verbal reasoning alongside maths and English, though the exact mix varies by consortium.
Check the admissions page for each school on your list rather than assuming, because the components change between years.
My child is much weaker at NVR than at maths. Should I worry?
Usually not. It is the most format-dependent section and the gap typically closes within a few weeks of regular exposure.
If it does not close at all after consistent practice, that is worth a conversation, because persistent spatial difficulty sometimes points to something worth understanding properly.
