About this lesson
By the end of this lesson your child can read, write and compare any four-digit number, say what each digit is worth, put the comma in the right place, and explain why seven thousand and five is 7,005 and not 705. Four-digit place value is where a lot of children quietly come unstuck, because a number that looks familiar is suddenly three separate things to get right at once.
Topics covered:
- Thousands, hundreds, tens and ones, partitioning a number and saying what each digit is worth
- Numbers in words, both directions, for example writing 5,382 as five thousand three hundred and eighty two
- Zero as a placeholder, the difference between 2,006, 2,060 and 2,600
- One, ten, one hundred and one thousand more and less, including jumps that roll several columns over at once
- Comparing and ordering four-digit numbers, including numbers with different digit counts
