About this lesson
By the end of this lesson your child can find any percentage of any amount, whether it is a friendly 50%, a built one like 35%, or an awkward 98%, and know straight away which route to take. Percentage of an amount comes up on almost every 11+ and GCSE Foundation paper, and the marks are lost when a child knows 50% is half but has no method for 23%.
Topics covered:
- The facts to know by heart, 50% is a half, 25% is a quarter, 10% is a tenth and 1% is a hundredth
- Repeating a tenth to reach 20%, 30%, 40% and up to 90%
- Half a tenth and small steps of 1%, so 5%, 15%, 2% and 3% all become quick
- Splitting any percentage into tens and ones, for example 23% is 20% and 3%
- Taking a small piece off the whole, for example 98% is 100% take away 2%

Every answer is set out the same way. The working runs down the page as a ladder, 100% first, then the pieces your child found, then the total. Once that habit is in place, a question like 76% of 800 stops being frightening, because it is only 70% and 6% added together.
