School House Learning Centre teaches maths, English and science online, one to one, to children aged 8 to 16. We have worked with more than 120 families since 2020, preparing them for the 11+, SATs and GCSE.

We keep the team small on purpose. It is easier to turn work away than to lower that bar and hope a parent does not notice.

Why SHLC exists

They were working hard, sitting through every lesson, and still slipping behind. The problem was almost never ability. It was that nobody had stopped to work out which pieces were missing, so every new topic was being built on top of an older gap that had never been closed.
He started SHLC in 2020 to do that first part properly. Find out exactly what a child can and cannot do, build the plan around what is actually missing, then show the parent what is changing. Every tutor here works the same way, so the experience is the same whichever subject you come to us for.

Three steps, in this order, every time
Most tutoring starts with a worksheet in session one. We start by finding out what is wrong, because a worksheet only tells you that your child got something wrong, not why.
Assess before teaching
The first session is an assessment rather than a lesson. We map what your child knows across the subject and work out whether a lost mark came from the method, the arithmetic or from misreading the question. Those three problems need three different fixes, and guessing wastes weeks.
Build the plan around the real gaps
Lessons are sequenced to close the specific gaps we found, in the order that makes each one easier than the last. That is usually not the order of the specification, because the specification assumes nothing earlier is missing.
Track it and tell you
You get a written note covering what improved, what is still being worked on and what the next sessions will cover. You should not have to ask us whether it is working.
Five teachers, not a marketplace
Maths tutors teach maths and science tutors teach science. Nobody here covers a subject outside their own, because a tutor one chapter ahead of your child cannot spot the gap that caused the problem.

What the numbers are, and where they came from
GCSE students typically improve two to three grades in three to seven months.
That figure is the typical move across eleven grade changes and a resit pass logged since 2021. A grade 2 to a grade 5 in six months, a grade 6 to a grade 9 in seven. Every one of them is listed with its starting grade, its finishing grade and how long it took in how our GCSE students improve, so you can judge it rather than take our word for it.
Results vary with where a child starts, how much time is left and how much work they put in between lessons. Anyone promising a fixed outcome is selling you something.

A lot of what we build is free, because a parent doing this at home should not have to pay to find out what the exam looks like.
