About this lesson

By the end of these six lessons your child can read, write, compare, order and round any number from ten up to a billion, in digits or in words, and say straight away what every digit is worth. Place value is the foundation every later topic sits on, and a child who guesses at it in Year 3 is still guessing at it in Year 7.

What's included:

  • Reading Numbers to 100 - 4 units (Numbers in Words, Tens and Ones, One More and Ten More, Comparing Numbers), 68 questions
  • Reading Numbers to 1,000 - 5 units (Hundreds Tens and Units, Numbers in Words, Zero the Placeholder, One Ten and One Hundred More, Comparing Numbers), 80 questions
  • Reading Numbers to 10,000 - 5 units (Thousands and the Comma, Numbers in Words, Zero the Placeholder, More and Less, Comparing and Ordering), 80 questions
  • Reading Numbers to 1,000,000 - 7 units (The Five Columns, Reading Five-Digit Numbers, Thousands More and Less, Comparing and Ordering, The Sixth Column, Zero the Placeholder, Crossing to a Million), 104 questions
  • Reading Numbers to 1,000,000,000 - 7 units (The Millions Column, Reading Seven-Digit Numbers, Millions More and Less, Comparing and Ordering, Tens and Hundreds of Millions, Zero the Placeholder, Crossing to a Billion), 104 questions
  • Rounding Numbers - 7 units (Nearest 10, Nearest 100, Nearest 1,000, Nearest 10,000, Nearest 100,000, Nearest Million, Upper and Lower Bounds), 80 questions

Your child works through each lesson on any screen. They play with the tool at the start of a unit, click to reveal each step of a worked example, try the practice questions on paper, then click to check their own answer.

How it's structured:

  • Each of the 35 units opens with a hands-on tool, then a worked example clicked through line by line, then practice questions colour-coded easy, medium and hard
  • 516 questions in total across the 6 lessons, every one with a click-to-reveal answer and a reveal-all option, and most question banks have a New Questions button that generates a fresh set whenever you want more
  • Every lesson closes with its own 20-question mixed challenge, pulling from all its units, including spot-the-mistake, true or false and two-step story questions

26 hands-on tools a printed worksheet cannot give you. A clickable 100 square with built-in puzzles, so you can hide a number and ask your child what is underneath. Counter tables where ten counters in one column visibly swap for a single counter of the next, running out as far as the millions. Slavonic arrow cards that overlap, so your child sees why the zeros are hidden instead of writing 300 40 2. Odometers that roll 9,900,000 over into ten million one wheel at a time. Gattegno charts, digit card builders, and a number line that shows why 47 is nearer to 50 before any rounding rule is mentioned.

Use this if:

  • Your child is in Year 1 to Year 8 and you want place value built in order, from tens and ones up to a billion, rather than topped up one gap at a time
  • You are preparing for SATs or the 11+, where place value, comparing and rounding come up on the arithmetic paper every year
  • Your child reads 18 as 81, writes 705 for seven thousand and five, or thinks 90,000,000 beats 900,000,000 because of the zeros
  • You want a resource your child can check their own work with, not one more thing on your to-do list

FAQs

How do I access the lesson?

You'll get an email with your lesson link as soon as payment goes through. Click it to open the lesson in any browser, no login and no app to install.

How does the marking work?

There's no typing answers into a box. Your child works it out on paper, then clicks to reveal the correct answer and checks their own work. Full working is shown too, not just the final answer, so mistakes are easy to spot.

Does it work on a phone or tablet?

It works best on a tablet or laptop, where there's more room to read the examples and questions. It'll open on a phone too, but the text and diagrams can feel quite small on a smaller screen.

Can I use the lesson more than once?

Yes. There's no limit on how many times you open the link, so it's there for revision right up to the exam.

What if I lose the link or don't get the email?

Email info@shlc-tutor.co.uk and we'll resend it straight away.
