Reasoning & Problem Solving Bundle
An interactive lesson on screen. Your child works through worked examples, practises on their own, then tests themselves with questions that get harder as they go.
About this lesson
By the end of these six lessons your child can solve a full 9 by 9 sudoku without guessing, read and write any Roman numeral, crack a letter or number code, count in binary and other bases, complete a magic square or number pyramid, and take a multi step word problem apart before touching a calculation. These are the reasoning questions that sit outside the arithmetic syllabus and still turn up every year on 11+ papers, so they are the ones most children have never been taught. Six interactive lessons, 30 units, 456 questions.
What's included:
- Roman Numerals - 5 units (The Seven Symbols, Building Numbers, The Subtraction Trick, To 1000 and Years, Puzzles and Problems), 90 questions
- Sudoku Logic - 3 grid sizes and 5 arena levels (The Rules, Solve Along, Maybe and Not, Size 6 Grids, The Full 9 by 9), endless puzzles, every one solvable without guessing
- Anagrams and Codes - 7 units (Word Scramblers, Anagrams in Sentences, Letter Codes, Tougher Codes, Series and Analogies, Letter Sums, Number Codes), 118 questions
- Number Bases and Binary - 4 units (Bases All Around Us, Reading Binary, Writing Binary, Base Detective), 76 questions
- Magic Squares and Number Pyramids - 5 units (Pyramids, Magic Squares, Product and Factor Squares, Algebra Puzzles, Exam Challenge), 52 questions
- Multi-Step Word Problems - 9 units (The RUCSAC Method, Multiple Choice Tactics, A Fixed Part Plus A Rate, Sharing Into Parts, More Than Less Than Times As Many, Working Backwards, Totals In Disguise, Journeys Clocks and Zones, Area Perimeter and Square Units), 120 questions
Your child works through each lesson on any screen. They click to reveal each step of a worked example, try the practice questions on paper, then click to check their own answer.
How it's structured:
- Each of the 30 units opens with worked examples clicked through line by line, then a bank of practice questions colour-coded easy, medium and hard
- 456 questions in total across the 6 lessons, every one with a click-to-reveal answer and a reveal-all option, plus the sudoku lesson's endless puzzle generator on top
- Every lesson closes with its own mixed challenge, pulling from all of its units so your child has to work out which method the question needs before they start
Reasoning is the part of the 11+ that rewards being shown the method once. A child who has never met a number code will stare at four words and three unmatched numbers for the whole minute they had. A child who has been shown that you find the word with the unique letter first will have it in twenty seconds. The same is true of a sudoku that needs a pointing pair, a numeral that breaks the three in a row rule, and a word problem that hides its real question in the last line. None of it is difficult once the move has a name.
Each lesson carries tools your child can work with rather than read. There is a numeral builder that grows in value as letters are placed and stops when a string breaks the rules, a code machine that walks every letter along the alphabet one step at a time, a binary card machine that counts up in ones while the cards flip themselves, a pyramid and a magic square your child fills in and checks, a bar model builder that draws the story before the arithmetic starts, and a sudoku arena at five levels where a hint tells you which square is findable and never which digit goes in it.
Use this if:
- Your child is in Year 4 to Year 11 and meets reasoning questions on a paper they have never seen taught in a lesson
- You're preparing for the 11+, where codes, sequences, Roman numerals and multi step problems appear on nearly every board's paper
- Your child can do the arithmetic but freezes on a question that does not tell them which operation to use
- You want a resource your child can check their own work with, not one more thing on your to-do list

Aadam, the tutor has a lovely mannerism and has made my daughter feel at ease. He explains the question in a way that she understands and is patient with her. She has already seen the results at school from his help and has gone up two GCSE grades in a short period of time.P. Flower · December 2024

FAQs
How do I access the lesson?
You'll get an email with your lesson link as soon as payment goes through. Click it to open the lesson in any browser, no login and no app to install.
How does the marking work?
There's no typing answers into a box. Your child works it out on paper, then clicks to reveal the correct answer and checks their own work. Full working is shown too, not just the final answer, so mistakes are easy to spot.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
It works best on a tablet or laptop, where there's more room to read the examples and questions. It'll open on a phone too, but the text and diagrams can feel quite small on a smaller screen.
Can I use the lesson more than once?
Yes. There's no limit on how many times you open the link, so it's there for revision right up to the exam.
What if I lose the link or don't get the email?
