Steven taught science in UK schools for fourteen years, including as Director of Science. He is now an AQA Team Leader and marks GCSE science papers every summer.

About Steven
Steven taught science at a secondary school in West Yorkshire for fourteen years. He started as a science teacher in 2011, became Head of Science in 2015 and later led a team of science teachers delivering the national curriculum as Director of Science.
He has worked for AQA since 2014. He is now a Team Leader for the GCSE Combined Science Biology Paper 1 (Higher), which means he checks the marking of a team of around eight examiners. He has also marked GCSE Biology Paper 2, reviews papers for AQA after results day, and has helped determine grades under AQA's GCSE International contingency arrangements.
Away from the science department, Steven was his school's Head of Cultural Capital and Educational Visits Coordinator. He led Duke of Edinburgh's Award and Outward Bound trips and took students abroad to Iceland, Norway, Spain, New York and Florida. Ofsted picked out the school's trips and enrichment as a particular strength in 2022 and again in 2024.
Outside teaching, Steven is a private pilot. One of his classes bought him a flying lesson as a leaving present, he loved it, and he kept going until he had his licence. He now flies across the UK most weekends.
Each summer Steven marks real GCSE science papers and checks other examiners' marking. He often sees students lose marks because an idea is too vague or a calculation has no working shown. In six-mark answers, students sometimes list facts without linking them together.
Steven teaches the science, then helps your child explain it in answers that meet AQA's marking standards.
What to expect
All sessions are one-to-one and online. In the first session, Steven checks what your child knows in biology, chemistry and physics and where they need help.
Each lesson has a clear focus. Steven explains the topic and works through exam-style questions with your child. He then marks their answers as an AQA examiner would, showing where each mark comes from.
After each lesson, parents get an update on what was covered, what their child understood, what needs more work and what comes next.
