Harrogate Grammar School does not run an entrance exam
Despite the name it is a comprehensive, and places are allocated on the council's admission criteria rather than a test score. The selective options for Harrogate families sit outside the town, and each works differently.
What selective entry really looks like from Harrogate
Ripon Grammar School is the nearest state grammar, and the honest version of that sentence needs the next one attached. Its catchment covers Ripon, Boroughbridge, Masham and Thirsk, and day places go first to the top scorers living inside it. Harrogate sits outside, which means a Harrogate child is competing for whatever surplus remains, however well they score. There is also a small boarding intake, fourteen places in Year 7, considered as a separate group from day applicants.
None of that makes Ripon a bad target. It makes it a target that must come with a parallel plan rather than a bolted on afterthought, and I would rather a family heard that in Year 4 than discovered it on offer day.
The test itself is organised through North Yorkshire Council. One paper covers verbal skills, blending comprehension, spelling and verbal reasoning, and the other combines non verbal reasoning with maths. Everything is multiple choice, which shapes how practice should feel.
The independent route is more within Harrogate's control. Ashville College runs its own assessment day in January of Year 6, with maths, written English, a computer based cognitive test and an interview, and its academic scholarships are decided from that same sitting. Preparation there carries a possible fee reduction with it, which changes the arithmetic for some families.
Schools Harrogate families ask about
Harrogate Grammar School, along with St Aidan's and Rossett, is where most of my Harrogate GCSE work points. These are comprehensives, entry is not a tutoring problem, and the support that matters is the Maths grade once your child is in.
Ripon Grammar School is the state selective option, with the catchment reality set out above. Preparation for its multiple choice papers is a Year 5 job with Year 4 groundwork.
Ashville College is the independent option inside the town, assessing in the January of Year 6. Families often run a Ripon application and an Ashville application side by side, and the preparations overlap enough to share most of the work.

GCSE results these methods have produced
Real students, real timeframes. These are GCSE grade movements, including students already inside grammar and independent schools, where getting in was the easy half.
Groundwork started in Year 9 or Year 10 produces those numbers far more often than a panic started in Year 11. Nothing here is a promise attached to a booking.
On the entrance exam side, which is a separate job entirely, three students have won scholarship places at grammar or independent schools.

How the online sessions run
Every session is live and one to one, or live with the friends your child brings. Nothing is pre recorded.
Sessions run with a shared interactive whiteboard, so your child works through questions while the teaching happens rather than watching someone else write. Work is saved and sent over afterwards, along with short targeted practice for the week.

Common questions
Can a tutor get my child into Harrogate Grammar School?
No, and be wary of anyone who implies otherwise. Places are allocated on the published admission criteria, there is no entrance test, and tutoring has no effect on the outcome. Tutoring earns its keep later, on GCSE grades.
Is Ripon Grammar realistic from Harrogate?
It is possible rather than probable, because Harrogate is outside the catchment and day offers to outside families only come from surplus places. Score matters, but so do numbers you cannot control. Apply, prepare properly, and hold a genuine second option.
What does the Ashville College assessment involve?
