Leeds has no selective state grammar school. That one fact changes what preparation should look like here, because entrance exams in this city mean independent school assessments, each with its own paper and its own standard.

What families in Leeds are usually preparing for

Two very different jobs show up from Leeds, and they need different teaching.

The first is entrance exam preparation, almost always for independent schools. The Grammar School at Leeds is the main target and, despite the name, it is independent and sets its own assessment. Families also apply out to Bradford Grammar and to Heckmondwike Grammar, which is the nearest selective state grammar and reachable from south and west Leeds.

The second job is GCSE Maths, and in Leeds that is mostly grade 4 to 6 and grade 6 to 9 work. Two different problems again. A child stuck at 4 usually has holes in number and algebra that never got filled. A child stuck at 6 usually understands the topics and loses marks on method, working and the long multi step questions at the back of the paper.

Working out which of those your child is takes about twenty minutes. It is the single most useful thing to establish before spending money on lessons.

Schools around Leeds

The Grammar School at Leeds sets its own entrance assessment. Preparation aimed at it needs to match that paper rather than a generic 11+ workbook.

Bradford Grammar and Heckmondwike Grammar both take Leeds applicants each year and both set their own papers. Preparing for two schools at once is common and mostly efficient, because the underlying skills overlap even where the formats do not.

Everything else is GCSE and post 16 resit support across Leeds secondaries, in Maths, English and Science.

What we actually do

11+ entrance preparation

Aimed at independent school entrance assessments rather than a county grammar test, since that is what Leeds families actually sit.

GCSE Maths, English and Science

Weekly one to one or small group sessions built round the topics costing your child marks, not a march through the whole specification.

Self guided Maths Mastery Lessons

Interactive topic lessons that teach the method first, then test it. Answers are built in so you can check work quickly. Some lessons regenerate their questions so the same topic can be practised again.

Mock exam marking

Papers marked by an experienced teacher, returned with written feedback showing where the marks went and why.

How marking works

Not sure where your child actually stands? A diagnostic assessment finds the gaps before you spend anything on lessons, and free past papers are on the exam resources page if you want to test that yourself first.

GCSE results these methods have produced

Real students, real timeframes. These are GCSE grade movements, including students already inside grammar and independent schools, where getting in was the easy half.

Grade 3 to 6in 8 months
Grade 5 to 7in 3 months
Grade 6 to 9in 7 months
Resit passin 8 months

Groundwork started in Year 9 or Year 10 produces those numbers far more often than a panic started in Year 11. Nothing here is a promise attached to a booking.

On the entrance exam side, which is a separate job entirely, three students have won scholarship places at grammar or independent schools.

What it costs

One to one tuition starts from £40 per session, priced on level and exam focus.

Tutoring with Friends is the group option. Bring one or two friends and the price starts at £20 per student per session. Same lesson, same teacher, split cost.

Mock exam marking starts at £39.99 per paper, rising to £69.99 and £99.99 for faster turnaround and a one to one review. Bulk rates for schools on 20 papers or more.

Self guided lessons are the cheapest route in, priced per topic with no subscription.

If you are not sure which of those fits, a free consultation sorts it in fifteen minutes. Booking one does not commit you to anything.

How the online sessions run

Every session is live and one to one, or live with the friends your child brings. Nothing is pre recorded.

Sessions run with a shared interactive whiteboard, so your child works through questions while the teaching happens rather than watching someone else write. Work is saved and sent over afterwards, along with short targeted practice for the week.

Parents get progress updates rather than having to ask. If something is not landing, you hear it from me first.

Common questions

Is there a state grammar school in Leeds?

No. The Grammar School at Leeds is independent despite the name. The nearest selective state grammar is Heckmondwike Grammar in Kirklees, which does take Leeds applicants.

My child is sitting at grade 5 and wants a 7. Is that realistic?

It has been done in three months before now. Whether it is realistic for your child depends on whether the gap is knowledge or exam technique, which is the first thing a consultation establishes.

Do you do group sessions for Leeds students?

Yes. Tutoring with Friends starts at £20 per student per session when your child brings one or two friends at a similar level. Same teacher, same lesson, split cost.

Start with a conversation, not a contract

Tell me your child's year group, the school or exam you are aiming at, and where they are getting stuck. If I am not the right fit for Leeds I will say so and point you somewhere better.
