KS2 Place Value Help: Why Your Child Keeps Getting Stuck (And What Actually Works)

A child who guesses at place value in Year 3 is still guessing at it in Year 7. Here is why worksheets alone don't fix it, and what actually closes the gap.

Your child writes 705 when you say seven thousand and five. Or reads 18 as eighty-one. Or tells you 90,000,000 is bigger than 900,000,000 because it has more zeros in front.

I'm Aadam, and I've taught place value to hundreds of KS2 and 11+ students at SHLC. It is the quietest problem in primary maths, because a child can look fine on their times tables and still be guessing at what every digit is worth.

The real problem isn't the numbers

Place value gets treated as an early topic that gets ticked off in Year 2 and never revisited. It is actually the foundation that every later topic sits on, and a gap in it does not announce itself. It shows up years later wearing a different hat.

A child who is unsure what the third column means will struggle with:

Column arithmetic. Lining digits up correctly requires knowing which column each belongs in. Misaligned columns is a place value error, not an addition error.

Decimals. Comparing 0.45 and 0.6 needs the columns to mean something. A child who thinks 45 beats 6 will get it wrong every time.

Multiplying and dividing by powers of ten. The digits move, the decimal point does not. Children taught it as a trick rather than as place value get lost the moment the numbers change shape.

Rounding. Rounding to the nearest thousand is impossible if you are not certain which digit is the thousands digit.

Fix place value and four other topics get easier at the same time. That is unusual, and it is why it is worth the fortnight.

Why worksheets alone don't fix it

A place value worksheet asks your child to write the number in words, then write words as a number, twenty times. If they already understand the columns, they get twenty right. If they do not, they copy the pattern from the first question and still get most of them right.

The worksheet cannot tell the difference, and neither can you from the score.

What a child actually needs is to see ten of something become one of the next thing. Ten ones swapping for a ten. Ten thousands swapping for a ten thousand. That exchange is the whole idea, and it cannot be printed on paper. It has to be watched.

The place value skills that trip children up, in order

These genuinely have to go in order. Skipping ahead is what produces a Year 6 child who can read a million but not explain what the middle digit is worth.

1. Tens and ones. Reading and writing to 100, and the reversal problem, where 18 and 81 get swapped.

2. Hundreds, tens and units. Three-digit numbers in words and digits.

3. Zero as a placeholder. The one that causes the seven thousand and five problem. Zero is not nothing, it is holding a column open, and this needs teaching explicitly.

4. Thousands and the comma. Where the comma goes and why, which is what makes larger numbers readable at a glance.

5. Comparing and ordering. Longest number is not always biggest, and the leading digits decide it. This is where the 90,000,000 mistake lives.

6. Crossing a boundary. What happens when 9,999 becomes 10,000, or 999,999 becomes a million. Every digit changes at once and children find it genuinely surprising.

7. Millions and billions. Same rules, more columns. Straightforward once the first six are secure.

8. Rounding. Nearest ten through to nearest million, plus upper and lower bounds. It comes last because it depends on every skill above it.

What actually closes the gap

Ask what the digit is worth, not what it is. Point at the 4 in 3,428 and ask what it is worth. Four hundred, not four. A child who answers four every time has found you the gap in one question.

Show the exchange happening. Ten counters in one column visibly becoming one counter in the next is the moment place value clicks. Watching it once beats twenty written questions.

Use the number line before the rounding rule. Show your child that 47 sits nearer to 50 than 40 and let them see it. Then introduce the rule. Taught the other way round, rounding becomes a rule about the digit 5 that they misapply for years.

Say the number out loud. Most reading errors disappear when a child has to say the number rather than just look at it. Seven thousand and five sounds nothing like seven hundred and five.

What to do this week

Write 3,428 on a piece of paper. Point at the 4. Ask your child what it is worth.

If they say four hundred, point at the 3 and ask the same. If they say three thousand, place value is probably secure and you can move on to something else.

If they say four, you have found it, and it is worth stopping everything else for a fortnight to fix. Then write seven thousand and five in words and ask them to write it in digits. If you get 705, the placeholder zero is the specific gap.
