11+ Algebra Help: Why Your Child Keeps Getting Stuck (And What Actually Works)

Algebra is where confident maths students suddenly stop feeling confident. Here's why worksheets alone don't fix it, and what actually closes the gap.

Algebra is where a lot of confident maths students suddenly stop feeling confident. Numbers they understood perfectly well get replaced with letters, and the rules that used to make sense stop feeling obvious.

If your child freezes the moment a question swaps numbers for x, this is for you.

The real problem isn't the letters

Ask a child what "2x + 3" means and most can recite it back, "two times x, plus three." Ask them what it actually represents, why x is standing in for an unknown number, and the confusion starts. That gap between reciting algebra and understanding what it's doing is where marks get lost.

Algebra questions in 11+ and early GCSE papers rarely test whether a child can manipulate symbols in isolation. They test whether a child can translate a real situation into an expression, follow a function machine forwards and backwards, or solve for an unknown buried inside a word problem. A child who's only ever practised algebra as abstract symbol-shuffling, with no sense of what it's modelling, freezes the moment the question changes shape.

This is the pattern we see over and over. A child who "gets algebra" during a lesson, following along as a teacher works through examples, still drops marks in a mock paper, because following someone else's steps is not the same as generating your own.

Why worksheets alone don't fix it

Worksheets are useful for repetition. They are not built to build understanding.

A worksheet shows a child an equation and a blank space for the answer. It does not show them why a step was taken, and it gives no feedback in the moment when they go wrong. A child who mishandles a negative sign in step two of a multi-step equation often doesn't realise it until the final answer looks wrong, by which point they've lost track of where the actual error happened.

Research on retrieval practice backs up what tutors see daily. Children retain far more when they're made to reason through a concept actively, rather than passively copying a method from an example. A worksheet on its own does not force that reasoning. It just tests whether the reasoning happened somewhere else first.

The algebra skills that trip children up, in order

Algebra builds in a strict sequence, and skipping ahead is usually where the real trouble starts.

  • Writing algebraic expressions. The starting point. If a child can't translate "three more than double a number" into 2x + 3, everything built on top of that skill is shaky.
  • Collecting like terms and simplifying. This is where careless sign errors creep in, and where a child who "knows the rule" but hasn't internalised it starts making inconsistent mistakes under pressure.
  • Substitution and function machines. Understanding that a letter represents a specific, changeable value, and being able to work both forwards and backwards through a sequence of operations, is what separates a child who can manipulate symbols from one who understands what they mean.
  • Solving equations, one-step through to multi-step. The hardest of the four for most children, because it demands everything before it, expression-writing, simplifying, and substitution, working together at once, often inside a word problem that has to be translated into an equation first.

Each of these is a distinct skill, and children rarely improve at all four just by doing mixed practice papers. They need focused, sequential practice, because weakness in an earlier skill quietly sabotages every skill built on top of it.

What actually closes the gap

Three things move the needle for algebra specifically.

  • Concrete models before abstract rules. Function machines, bar models, and worked visual representations of what an expression is actually doing turn algebra from an abstract rule set into something a child can picture and reason through.
  • Immediate feedback. A child needs to know the moment a sign or a step has gone wrong, and why, not three days later when a worksheet gets marked. Catching an error at the exact point it happened is what makes the correct method stick.
  • Progressive difficulty, in the right order. Jumping straight to multi-step equations before expression-writing and simplifying are solid guarantees confusion. Algebra has to be built in sequence, not tackled all at once.

What to do this week

If your child is stuck on algebra right now, don't reach for another generic worksheet pack.
