Your child scores well on the topic tests and then drops marks on the paper. The questions that catch them use no harder maths. They leave your child to work out which maths the question wants.
I'm Aadam, and I've taught 11+ reasoning to hundreds of students at SHLC. When a child stops on one of these questions, what they are missing is rarely a method. It is a first move.
The real problem is the blank first thirty seconds
Watch a child meet a reasoning question and you will usually see them read it, look at it, read it again, and write nothing. They are waiting to recognise it, and the question is written so that they will not.
Three things are going on.
They are looking for the topic instead of the question. A child who has been taught in topic blocks expects a question to announce itself. A reasoning question describes a situation and leaves them to decide what it is about.
They think the first line of working has to be right. So they wait for certainty, and it does not come. Trying a case and seeing what happens is a legitimate mathematical move, and most children have never been told that.
They stop the moment they get a number. The question asked how much change there was and they have worked out the total cost. The maths was correct and the answer is wrong.
Why worksheets alone don't fix it
A reasoning worksheet is usually a set of hard questions with answers at the back. A child who does not know how to start gets nothing from it, because the answer shows them the destination and not the first step. They check, feel worse, and learn that reasoning questions are for other people.

Reasoning is also a set of skills rather than one. Working backwards, trying a case, ruling options out, spotting a pattern, keeping track across several steps. Each one can be taught on its own, and a mixed worksheet teaches none of them because it never says which one this question wants.
The reasoning skills that trip children up, in order
The first two carry more marks than the rest put together, which is where I would start.
1. Reading the question twice and marking what it asks for. Underline the thing being asked, so a correct calculation does not end up answering the wrong question.
2. Working backwards from the end. Starting at the finishing amount and undoing each step, which turns a large group of problems from impossible into routine.
3. Trying a case, then organising the cases. Picking a sensible number, seeing what happens, then working through the possibilities in order rather than at random.
4. Ruling options out. Using one cheap check, such as the last digit or whether the answer must be odd, to remove wrong options before doing any real work.
5. Roman numerals. A complete rule system with subtraction pairs, which is good practice at following a rule to the letter.
6. Codes, letter patterns and anagrams. Finding the rule that turns one thing into another, then applying it in reverse.
7. Number bases and binary. Place value again in an unfamiliar base, which is what makes place value in base ten click for some children.
8. Magic squares and number pyramids. Using one known total to unlock a missing cell, then using that cell to unlock the next.
9. Sudoku logic. Writing only what is certain and eliminating the rest, which is the same habit the other nine skills need.
10. Multi step word problems. Holding a running answer across several steps and checking it against what the question asked for.

What actually closes the gap
Three habits do most of the work.
Teach starting moves rather than answers. Give your child a hard question and ask only for the first line of working. Not the answer. Once the first line is down, most children finish on their own.
Make working backwards a named method. If the question tells you where you ended up, start there and undo. Children who have a name for it will reach for it, and children who have only met it once by accident will not.

Finish by putting the answer back into the question. Read the question again with the answer in place and check it makes sense. This catches the correct calculation that answered the wrong question, which is how most marks go on a reasoning paper.

Every lesson shows a first move before it asks for one, revealed a line at a time. Your child commits to an answer, then clicks to see it. The tiers climb slowly, which matters here because a hard reasoning question with no starting point teaches nothing.

What to do this week
None of this needs a purchase.
Give your child a hard word problem and ask for one thing only: write the first line. Tell them it does not have to be right. Most children who freeze on these questions are not stuck on the maths, they are waiting for certainty before they will put pen to paper.
Then ask them this: I think of a number, double it, add 6, and get 20. What was my number? If they try to work forwards, teach working backwards tonight. Start at 20, undo the add 6, undo the double. Half an hour on that method pays back across the whole paper.
