Charts and Tables Help: Why Your Child Keeps Getting Stuck (And What Actually Works)

Your child can read a bar chart. The exam does not ask them to read one, it asks them to answer a question using one. Here is the difference.

Reading a bar chart is not what the exam asks for. It asks your child to answer a question using one, which is a different job.

I'm Aadam, a maths teacher, and data handling is the topic parents ask me about least and I correct most. Parents skip this topic in revision because it looks like the easy part of the paper. A lot of marks go here.

The real problem isn't reading the chart

Three things go wrong, and none of them is about understanding what a bar chart is.

Assuming one square is worth one. If the axis goes up in fives, or in twos, a child reading squares rather than the scale gets every value wrong on the whole question. The same applies to a pictogram where one symbol stands for four people and half a symbol appears.

Answering the question they expected. The chart shows how many children chose each sport. The question asks how many more chose football than tennis. Your child reads off football and writes that number down, because reading off is what they have practised.

Trying to get a number out of a pie chart with nothing to scale it against. A pie chart tells you the fraction. It cannot tell you how many people unless the question gives the total somewhere, and children who have not been shown that spend a long time on an impossible step.

There is one more that catches out even strong children. In a Venn diagram, the number in the overlap is already included in each circle. A child who adds the circle totals together counts the middle twice.

Why worksheets alone don't fix it

A data handling worksheet asks your child to read six values off a chart. They get six ticks and learn nothing, because reading a value was never the difficult part.

Nearly every real question in this topic needs two steps. Read two values, then compare them. Read a total, then find a fraction of it. Fill one missing cell, then use it to find another. A worksheet that stops after step one leaves your child practising the half they can already do.

The data handling skills that trip children up, in order

Pie charts make no sense to a child who has not worked out what one square on a bar chart is worth, so this order is not optional.

1. Tally marks and frequency. Grouping in fives, then turning a tally into a number and a table into a total.

2. Working out what one square is worth. Written down before any value is read. This habit protects every chart question in the paper.

3. Pictogram keys, including part symbols. Deciding what half and a quarter of a symbol are worth before counting them.

4. Bar charts and the two step questions. How many more, how many altogether, and which two categories together beat a third.

5. Line graphs. Reading between two plotted points, spotting the steepest rise, and saying what a flat section means.

6. Two way tables. Filling in missing cells from the totals, and reading a single cell back as a full sentence so the child knows what it means.

7. Venn diagrams. The overlap counted once, the region outside both circles, and working from the grand total backwards.

8. Carroll diagrams. Sorting by two yes or no properties at once, which is the same idea as a Venn diagram in a different shape.

9. Pie charts. Fraction of 360 degrees, fraction of the total, and knowing that a pie chart alone never gives you a headcount.

What actually closes the gap

Three things to teach directly, rather than hoping they get picked up.

Work out the scale before reading anything. One square equals two, written at the top of the working. It takes five seconds and it protects the whole question, because the alternative is being wrong in a way that looks confident.

Practise the second step on purpose. After your child reads a value off, ask the follow up. How many more? What fraction of the total is that? Which two together beat the biggest one? The follow up is the exam question, and it is the part that never gets practised at home.

Read every table cell as a sentence. Nine boys chose swimming. Saying it out loud turns a number in a box into a fact, and a child who can say the sentence can fill the missing cell without a method.

What to do this week

Try this tonight, with no preparation.

Find any bar chart, in a newspaper or on a cereal box, and ask your child one question: what is one square worth here? If they answer one without checking the axis, start there.

Then ask a two step question about the same chart. Not what does the tallest bar say, but how many more than the shortest one. If the first is easy and the second is not, that is exactly what to practise.
