About this lesson
Sequences questions on the 11+ and GCSE paper go well beyond spotting a pattern and continuing it. Your child needs to find a hidden term, write the algebraic nth term rule, then use that rule to check whether a number belongs in the sequence at all. This lesson builds all three skills in order, from the first simple pattern to full exam-style reasoning.

The step students often guess at instead of calculating is this. When the two nearest known terms in a sequence aren't next to each other, work out how many steps apart they are, divide the total jump by that number, then use the result to fill in every gap. Your child then applies the same idea to solve equations like 4n − 5 = 26, checking whether a number belongs in the sequence at all.
