Coordinates, Measures and Time Help: Why Your Child Keeps Getting Stuck (And What Actually Works)

These are the questions parents assume are free marks, and they are the ones children quietly lose most often. Here is why, and what to do.

These are the questions parents assume are free marks. In my experience they are where children lose the most marks, because nothing about them looks difficult enough to practise.

I'm Aadam. I have taught these five topics to several hundred 11+ and GCSE students at SHLC. They are not hard. They demand precision, and precision is a habit a child can build in a fortnight.

Precision is the whole topic

Four mistakes come up again and again, and each one costs a whole question rather than a step.

Coordinates written the wrong way round. Along the corridor, then up the stairs. Your child knows this and still writes the y value first when the numbers are close together and the pressure is on.

Time written as if it were a decimal. One and a half hours becomes 1.5, which is correct, and 1 hour 30 becomes 1.30, which is not the same thing. Mixing the two produces answers that are close enough to look right.

Converting in the wrong direction. 250 grams to kilograms gets multiplied by 1000 instead of divided. The child knows the number 1000 and has not decided which way the answer should move.

Subtracting timetable times. 11:15 take away 09:47 is not 1.68 and it is not 2.32. Time is not base ten, and subtracting it as if it were is the most common error I see across these five topics.

Why worksheets alone don't fix it

A worksheet on unit conversion gives your child twenty conversions that all go the same way. They practise the multiplication and never practise the decision about which direction to go, which is the difficult part.

These five topics also get taught months apart and then tested together. A speed question is a conversion question and a time question wearing a different hat, so a wobble in any one of them costs the whole answer without telling your child which part let them down.

The skills that trip children up, in order

The last one leans on three of the others at once, so it is the wrong place to start.

1. Reading and plotting coordinates in all four quadrants. x before y, said the same way every time, including where one or both values are negative.

2. Finding a missing corner and a midpoint. Using the shape rather than counting squares one at a time, which is what the harder questions require.

3. Translations, reflections and rotations. Each one needs a specific extra piece of information, and naming that piece is half the mark.

4. Metric conversions. Millimetres, centimetres, metres and kilometres, and grams and kilograms, taught as a ladder so the child decides direction before touching the numbers.

5. Reading a scale where one division is not one unit. Working out what one small mark is worth before reading the value off, on rulers, jugs and dials.

6. Imperial and metric together. Miles and kilometres, pounds and kilograms, pints and litres, done with a ratio table rather than a remembered decimal.

7. Telling the time on both clock faces and in 24 hour form. Including the quarter to and twenty past wording that older children sometimes still guess at.

8. Time intervals and timetables. Counting forwards to the next whole hour rather than subtracting, which removes the base ten mistake.

9. Calendars, leap years and durations in days. Including questions that cross a month boundary.

10. Speed, distance and time. Built as a ratio table so the units have to match, rather than a triangle the child has to remember the shape of.

What actually closes the gap

Three habits, and the first takes five seconds a question.

Write the unit on every line of working. Every line, including the ones in the middle. A child who writes grams next to every number notices the moment a kilogram appears, and can then see which way to convert instead of trying to remember.

Count time forwards to the next whole hour. From 09:47, count 13 minutes to reach 10:00, then a whole hour to 11:00, then 15 minutes to 11:15. That is 1 hour and 28 minutes. It takes longer to describe than to do.

Do transformations with paper and a pencil in hand. Squared paper, a traced shape, and an actual physical turn for a rotation. Children who picture rotations in their heads get them wrong; children who turn the paper get them right and then stop needing to turn it.

What to do this week

You do not need a worksheet for this one.

Ask your child how long it is from 09:47 to 11:15. If they set it out as a subtraction, teach the counting forwards method tonight. Ten minutes on it pays for itself.

Then ask them this: how many kilograms is 250 grams? If they reach for 1000 without first deciding whether the answer should be bigger or smaller than 250, that is the habit to build, and writing the units down is how you build it.
