About this download
Eighteen pages. It opens with a place value wall poster running from ones to billions, a blank version of the same chart to fill in, and a rounding anchor chart with the rule, a worked number line and the three steps. Those three go on the wall. Then twelve practice sheets, two per topic, from tens and ones up to reading numbers into the billions and rounding to the nearest million.
Every sheet mixes easy, medium and hard questions, so it starts where your child is comfortable and finishes somewhere they have to think. All 98 questions come with a keyed answer, on two answer pages at the back.
The questions are the same ones taught inside the Place Value and Rounding Mastery Lessons, which is what makes this useful as a check rather than as filler. Whichever sheet your child slows down on is the topic to work on next.
Who this is for
Parents and teachers who want to know whether place value is actually secure before moving on. It suits Year 3 to Year 6, or 3rd through 5th grade, and it is the fastest way to find the exact point where a child stops being able to read a number rather than just guessing at it.

Round down and round up on one page, a worked number line for 3,472, the same number rounded four different ways, and the three steps written out.

Numbers to 100
Tens and ones, words to digits and digits to words, partitioning, and ordering. Two sheets.
Numbers to 1,000
Hundreds, tens and ones, reading three digit numbers out loud, and comparing them. Two sheets.
Numbers to 10,000
Thousands, and the zero placeholder that turns three thousand and four into 3,004 rather than 34. Two sheets.

Ten thousands and hundred thousands, where most children first lose track of which column they are in. Two sheets.

How it works
Put the poster up
The first three pages are reference, not practice. Print them once, stick them up, and your child can look across at them while they work.
Print the sheets
Twelve question sheets, two per topic, and two answer pages. Keep the answers back until your child has finished.
Start at section 1, even if it looks easy
The early sections take two minutes for a confident child and expose the gap in under a minute for a child who has one.
Watch where it slows down
The section where your child starts counting on their fingers, or writes 30040 for three thousand and forty, is the section to work on. That is what this pack is for.
Mark it together
Go through the answer page with your child rather than handing it back marked. The conversation about a wrong answer is worth more than the tick.
Come back to it in two weeks
Redo the section they struggled with. A score that holds a fortnight later is a score you can trust.

FAQs
What age is this for?
Broadly Year 3 to Year 6, or 3rd through 5th grade. Place value and rounding start early and keep being tested, so an older child who is shaky on the million and billion sections will still get plenty out of it.
Do I need to buy anything to use it?
No. The pack works on its own and the answers are included. It covers the same ground as the Place Value and Rounding Bundle, so if a section shows up a gap there is a full lesson waiting for it, but nothing here depends on that.
Where do the questions come from?
They are pulled from the question banks inside the six Mastery Lessons on place value and rounding, so the free pack and the paid lessons ask questions the same way, in the same order of difficulty.
Is it printable?
Yes. Eighteen A4 portrait pages that print at home in colour or black and white. The answer boxes are sized to be written in, and the poster is laid out to be read from across a room.
What is the difference between the charts and the sheets?
The charts are reference. They show the columns, the times ten rule and the rounding rule, and they stay on the wall. The sheets are practice, and they are the part that tells you whether any of it has landed.
My child got stuck on the millions section. What next?
That is the most common place to stall, because the columns stop being nameable one by one. The Reading Numbers to 1,000,000 and to 1,000,000,000 lessons teach the grouping method that fixes it.
