What this quiz can and cannot tell you

This is a surface level tool. Nine questions about your impressions cannot diagnose a child, and it is worth being clear about where the limits sit before you act on the result.

  • It measures your view of your child, not your child. Two parents answering about the same child often land on different profiles. A teacher would answer differently again.
  • It has not been validated. These profiles come from what we see in lessons. They have not been tested against exam marks, mock scores or progress over time, so treat the result as a description rather than evidence.
  • Most children are a mix. The closest dot is the nearest fit out of eight, not a complete account. The second and third closest usually apply too, which is why the map shows all of them.
  • Behaviour changes with the topic. A child can be confident in number and frozen in algebra. One answer per question flattens that into an average.
  • It never sees the actual maths. Only marked written work shows which topics are missing. This quiz cannot find a gap in place value or fractions.
  • It describes this term, not your child. Confidence in particular moves fast, in both directions. A result from six months ago may be about a child who no longer exists.

Use it as a hypothesis to check, not a label to apply. If the result matches what you already see at the kitchen table, it is probably worth acting on. If it does not, trust what you see.

Two children can sit on the same grade for completely different reasons. These are the eight patterns we see most often in GCSE and 11+ maths, and the strategy that shifts each one.

Why the same maths problem needs different fixes for different children

Two children can get the same question wrong for opposite reasons. One rushed it, one froze on it, one never learned the method, one knew the method and lost the thread halfway through. The mark looks identical and the fix is completely different, which is why generic revision advice so often does nothing.

Most children are a blend, and the blend changes with the topic. The useful question is not which type your child is but which one is causing the marks you are looking at right now.

Why the label matters less than the response

Learning-style labels have a poor evidence base, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise. There is no good evidence that teaching a child in their preferred style improves outcomes.

What this diagnostic is doing is different. It is not classifying how your child learns. It is identifying why the marks are being lost, which is a question about behaviour and gaps rather than about personality, and which does have a different answer for different children.

The most common mismatch

By a wide margin: a child who freezes in tests being given more timed practice, because the low mark looked like a knowledge problem.

That makes it worse. Every timed paper reinforces the association between the subject and panic. The right sequence is untimed until comfortable, then timed, and it feels counterintuitive to a parent watching the clock run down to an exam. What to do with the result

Change one thing, for three weeks, and see whether the specific problem moves. Not the overall grade, which drifts for many reasons. The specific thing.

If the rusher stops losing marks to unit errors, the change worked. If nothing moves, the diagnosis was wrong and it is worth trying the next most likely pattern rather than doing more of something that is not working.

Is this a real assessment?

It is a structured diagnostic based on the patterns we see across the papers we mark, not a validated psychometric test, and we would not present it as one.

Its job is to give you a sensible first hypothesis about why marks are being lost, so you can test it rather than guess.

What if my child fits several patterns?

Most do. Work on whichever is costing the most marks right now, which is usually visible from a marked paper.

Fixing one often improves another, because a child who stops freezing usually stops rushing too.
