Expanding Brackets Calculator

Expand single brackets or a pair of double brackets, with every multiplication written out before anything is collected. Double brackets use the FOIL order, first, outside, inside, last, so the four little products are visible before they merge into the final expression. Nothing is skipped, nothing appears from nowhere.

Answer

Method, Step by Step

    Worked Example

    Expand (x + 2)(x + 3).

    1. FOIL: First x², Outside 3x, Inside 2x, Last 6
    2. Collect the x terms:3x + 2x = 5x
    3. So (x + 2)(x + 3) = x² + 5x + 6

    Answer: x² + 5x + 6

    Try These Yourself

    Expand 4(2x − 5).Show answerHide answer

    Answer: 8x − 20

    4 × 2x and 4 × −5.

    Expand (x + 5)(x − 2).Show answerHide answer

    Answer: x² + 3x − 10

Outside −2x, inside 5x, collect to 3x; last is −10.

    Expand (x − 3)².Show answerHide answer

    Answer: x² − 6x + 9

    (x − 3)(x − 3): −3x twice, and −3 × −3 = +9.
