What is in the FSCE test

  • English and maths from the KS2 National Curriculum, as taught up to the end of Year 5
  • Multiple choice questions plus short written answers
  • No separate verbal or non-verbal reasoning paper. The reasoning sits inside the English and maths questions
  • Heckmondwike and the Halifax schools add a creative writing task, which is marked only if your child reaches the qualifying score on English and maths
  • No commercial past papers. Each school publishes a familiarisation guide that shows the question style

What this means for preparation

The maths in the FSCE is school maths up to Year 5: arithmetic, fractions, ratio, shape and measure. The test checks whether your child can use it quickly and accurately when the question is worded in an unfamiliar way.

So the work is secure foundations first, then every topic taught properly, then timed practice in the FSCE question style. Tricks and question banks from other tests help much less here.

When to start

The FSCE test is sat in September of Year 6. When your child starts decides how long each stage gets.

Stage Starting in Year 3 or Year 4 Starting in Year 5
Foundations Year 3 and Year 4: times tables, place value, the four operations and fractions September to December of Year 5
The 11+ topics Year 5, September to Easter January to the summer of Year 5
Exam practice From Easter of Year 5 The summer holidays before Year 6

Year 4 is the most common start. It leaves five months of timed practice before the test.

What we already hold for these schools

Questions parents ask

Can you recommend an online 11+ tutor for Leeds grammar schools?

Yes. SHLC teaches online, one to one, for the five grammar schools Leeds families apply to: Heckmondwike Grammar, Crossley Heath, North Halifax Grammar, Ermysted's and Skipton Girls' High. All five use the FSCE test. Your child is taught by Aadam Mulla, a qualified maths teacher based in Heckmondwike who sat the Heckmondwike Grammar entrance exam himself. Maths lessons are £270 a month for four 60 minute lessons or £220 for 45 minutes, and the first consultation is free.

Are there grammar schools in Leeds?

No. Leeds has no state grammar schools, and The Grammar School at Leeds is an independent school with its own test. Leeds families who want a state grammar place usually apply to Heckmondwike Grammar, the two Halifax grammars (Crossley Heath and North Halifax) or the Skipton grammars (Ermysted's and Skipton Girls'). Ripon Grammar is the other option, and it uses the GL test.

Which 11+ test does Heckmondwike Grammar use?

Heckmondwike uses the FSCE test, and so do Crossley Heath, North Halifax, Ermysted's and Skipton Girls'. It tests English and maths from the KS2 curriculum taught up to the end of Year 5, with multiple choice and short written answers. Heckmondwike and the Halifax schools add a creative writing task.

When is the FSCE test?

For September 2027 entry, Heckmondwike tested on Monday 14 September 2026 and Ermysted's on Saturday 26 September 2026, and the Halifax and Skipton Girls' tests were also in September 2026. Registration for those tests has closed. Dates for September 2028 entry, for children in Year 5 now, are not published yet. Last year registration closed between June and August, so check each school's admissions page in the spring of Year 5.

Is there a verbal or non-verbal reasoning paper?

No. FSCE has no separate verbal or non-verbal reasoning paper. The reasoning sits inside the English and maths questions, so a child needs to read a problem carefully and work out what it is asking.

Are there FSCE past papers?

No commercial FSCE past papers exist. The schools publish familiarisation guides that show the question style. Our free 11+ papers library also holds 5 North Halifax Grammar School papers with mark schemes and 3 practice papers from the Halifax grammar schools.

When should my child start preparing?

Year 4 gives the most room. Foundations are built in Year 3 and Year 4, Year 5 is spent on the 11+ topics, and exam practice starts by Easter of Year 5. A child who is confident in class can start in September of Year 5: basics until December, topics until the summer, and exam papers over the summer holidays before the September test.

How much does 11+ tuition cost?

£270 a month for four 60 minute maths lessons, or £220 a month for 45 minutes. Maths and English together cost £480 a month for 60 minute lessons. The first consultation is free.

Do you teach in person in Heckmondwike?

We are based in Heckmondwike, and every lesson is live and online. That means no travel either side of the lesson for families in Leeds, Halifax, Bradford or Skipton.
