About this download

Sixteen pages. It opens with a fraction wall poster running from one whole down to twelfths, a blank version of the same wall to shade in, an equivalent fractions anchor chart, and a page of bar models. Those four go on the wall or in front of your child. Then ten practice sheets, two per topic, from writing a shaded shape as a fraction through to working backwards from a part to the whole.

Every sheet mixes easy, medium and hard questions, so it starts where your child is comfortable and finishes somewhere they have to think. All 84 questions come with a keyed answer, on two answer pages at the back.

There is not a single pizza in it. Every diagram is a bar, a wall or a number line, because those are the ones that still work when the question becomes three fifths of forty rather than a shaded circle.

The questions are the same ones taught inside the Fractions Mastery Lessons, which is what makes this useful as a check rather than as filler. Whichever sheet your child slows down on is the topic to work on next.

Who this is for

Parents and teachers who want to know whether fractions are actually secure before moving on to percentages and ratio. It suits Year 4 to Year 7, or 4th through 6th grade, and it is the fastest way to find the exact point where a child stops reasoning and starts guessing.

What's included

The fraction wall poster

Nine rows, from one whole down to twelfths, every row exactly the same length so the pieces can be compared by eye. This is the page that makes a twelfth being thinner than a fifth obvious rather than something to memorise. Print it once and put it up.

The blank fraction wall

The same nine rows, empty. Your child shades the first piece of every row, then looks down the wall for the rows that end in line with each other. That is equivalence discovered rather than announced.

The equivalent fractions anchor chart

One half, two quarters, three sixths and four eighths drawn as bars that all stop at the same line, with the multiply rule and the simplify rule written underneath where a child will believe them.

The bar model page

Worked strips showing the three question types one drawing solves, a fraction of an amount, a reverse fraction and a comparison, then nine blank bars to use on any question.

Intro to Fractions

Writing a shaded shape as a fraction, equivalent fractions, simplifying, and converting between mixed and improper. Two sheets.

Adding & Subtracting Fractions

Same denominator first, then finding the lowest common denominator, which is where most children actually come unstuck. Two sheets.

Multiplying & Dividing Fractions

Multiplying across, cancelling before you multiply, and flipping the second fraction to divide. Two sheets.

Fractions of Amounts

Divide by the bottom, multiply by the top, including the increase and decrease questions that hide the same method. Two sheets.

Reverse Fractions

Given a part, work back to the whole. Almost no free practice covers this direction, which is exactly why it catches children out. Two sheets.

Two full answer pages

Every answer grouped by section and sheet, so marking takes two minutes.

How it works

1

Put the wall up

The first four pages are reference, not practice. Print them once, stick the fraction wall up, and your child can look across at it while they work.

2

Print the sheets

Ten question sheets, two per topic, and two answer pages. Keep the answers back until your child has finished.

3

Start at section 1, even if it looks easy

Writing a shaded shape as a fraction takes a confident child two minutes and exposes a shaky one in under a minute.

4

Watch where it slows down

The section where your child starts guessing, or adds the denominators together, is the section to work on. That is what this pack is for.

5

Mark it together

Go through the answer page with your child rather than handing it back marked. The conversation about a wrong answer is worth more than the tick.

6

Come back to it in two weeks

Redo the section they struggled with. A score that holds a fortnight later is a score you can trust.

What parents say

I have gone through the initial lessons on fractions and they have been helpful. Using bar models and the illustrations have helped my third graders understand better.

FAQs

What age is this for?

Broadly Year 4 to Year 7, or 4th through 6th grade. Fractions start early and keep being tested all the way to GCSE, so an older child who is shaky on reverse fractions or on finding a common denominator will still get plenty out of it.

Do I need to buy anything to use it?

No. The pack works on its own and the answers are included. It covers the same ground as the Fractions Mastery Bundle, so if a section shows up a gap there is a full lesson waiting for it, but nothing here depends on that.

Where do the questions come from?

They are pulled from the question banks inside the five Mastery Lessons on fractions, so the free pack and the paid lessons ask questions the same way, in the same order of difficulty.

Why are there no pizzas in it?

Because a circle cut into slices only works while the fraction is simple, and it does not carry over to a number line or to a fraction of an amount. Bars and walls do both, which is why every diagram in the pack is one or the other.

Is it printable?

Yes. Sixteen A4 portrait pages that print at home in colour or black and white. The answer boxes are sized to be written in, and the fraction wall is laid out to be read from across a room.

My child got stuck on adding fractions. What next?

That is the most common place to stall, and it is almost always the common denominator rather than the adding. The Adding & Subtracting Fractions lesson teaches the multiples method that fixes it.
