What the Calderdale exam actually asks for

The joint test assesses English, maths and creative writing, and the questions stay inside what a child has been taught by the end of Year 5. On paper that sounds gentle. In the room it is not, because a qualifying standard has to be met in all three parts, so a weak section cannot hide behind two strong ones.

The maths and English sections reward what every selective paper rewards, careful reading and accuracy at pace. The creative writing section is the one that separates Halifax from nearly every other 11+ in the country. A child can be quick and correct with numbers and still freeze when asked to plan, write and finish a piece of fiction against the clock, simply because nobody has ever asked them to do it under exam conditions before.

That is trainable in exactly the way maths is. Short timed pieces every week, marked for structure and control rather than length, then redrafted. Done from Year 5 it becomes routine. Left until the summer before the test it becomes the reason a capable child misses.

The admin has a trap in it too. Registering for the entrance exam happens directly with the schools, with a window that closes in the summer term of Year 5, and it is separate from Calderdale Council's application form in the autumn of Year 6. Families need both. Completing one and assuming it covers the other is a mistake that surfaces every single year.

Schools around Halifax

The Crossley Heath School at Savile Park and The North Halifax Grammar School at Illingworth are both selective state grammar schools, and they admit through the shared exam described above. Both give priority in their oversubscription criteria to Pupil Premium children from the local priority area, which is worth knowing if that applies to your family, because it can change the score your child effectively needs.

For families in Brighouse and Elland, Heckmondwike Grammar over the Kirklees border is a realistic alternative or second application. It sets a different paper, and running the two preparations together is workable because the underlying skills overlap.

The larger share of my Halifax work is not entrance exams at all. It is GCSE Maths support for students across Calderdale's secondary schools, including plenty who are already inside the two grammars and finding that a selective cohort moves quickly.

GCSE results these methods have produced

Real students, real timeframes. These are GCSE grade movements, including students already inside grammar and independent schools, where getting in was the easy half.

Groundwork started in Year 9 or Year 10 produces those numbers far more often than a panic started in Year 11. Nothing here is a promise attached to a booking.

On the entrance exam side, which is a separate job entirely, three students have won scholarship places at grammar or independent schools.
