About this lesson
By the end of this lesson your child can look at any HCF or LCM question, worded or plain, and know instantly which one it needs and how to find it. Highest common factor and lowest common multiple come up all over the 11+ and GCSE Foundation papers, and the marks are usually lost on the choice rather than the method.
Topics covered:
- Finding the highest common factor by listing the factors of each number and ringing what they share
- Finding the lowest common multiple by counting up from the bigger number until the smaller one catches it
- Choosing between them, splitting something into equal groups needs the HCF, two things repeating until they line up needs the LCM
- Working backwards, finding a missing number from a given HCF or LCM
- Leftover questions, the smallest number that leaves 1 over when shared into two different group sizes
Every worked example is clicked through one line at a time, so nothing appears before your child has had a moment to think about it. They work the practice questions out on paper, then click each answer to check it.
How it's structured:
- Four units, each opening with two worked examples clicked through line by line, then 12 practice questions colour coded easy, medium and hard
- 76 practice questions in total, every answer hidden behind click to reveal, with a reveal all button on each page
- A final 20 question mixed challenge drawing on all four units, with the questions deliberately unlabelled so the choice has to be made first
Four hands-on Explore tools sit alongside the worked examples. A Common Factor Finder that tests one number at a time and shows which ones land in both lists, a Multiples Ladder that tells you which row is behind, a story sorter that highlights the exact words giving the question type away, and a Number Pair Machine for building your own pairs to a target HCF and LCM.
Use this if:
- Your child is in Year 4 to Year 11 and meeting HCF and LCM for the first time, or revising it for an exam
- You are preparing for 11+ entrance papers or GCSE Foundation
- Your child can do the method but keeps picking the wrong one on worded questions
- You want a resource your child can check their own work with, not one more thing on your to-do list

Aadam, the tutor has a lovely mannerism and has made my daughter feel at ease. He explains the question in a way that she understands and is patient with her. She has already seen the results at school from his help and has gone up two GCSE grades in a short period of time.P. Flower · December 2024

FAQs
How do I access the lesson?
You'll get an email with your lesson link as soon as payment goes through. Click it to open the lesson in any browser, no login and no app to install.
How does the marking work?
There's no typing answers into a box. Your child works it out on paper, then clicks to reveal the correct answer and checks their own work. Full working is shown too, not just the final answer, so mistakes are easy to spot.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
It works best on a tablet or laptop, where there's more room to read the examples and questions. It'll open on a phone too, but the text and diagrams can feel quite small on a smaller screen.
Can I use the lesson more than once?
Yes. There's no limit on how many times you open the link, so it's there for revision right up to the exam.
What if I lose the link or don't get the email?
