About this lesson
By the end of this lesson your child can add or subtract any two decimals, however many decimal places each one has, and pick the quickest way to do it before they start. They stop lining numbers up on the right and start lining them up on the point.
Topics covered:
- Adding tenths and hundredths, where a short number like 0.4 has to be written 0.40 before you can add it
- Adding thousandths and ten thousandths, carrying across the point in numbers like 47.352 + 28.6
- Subtracting tenths and hundredths, exchanging from the column to the left
- Subtracting thousandths and ten thousandths, including taking a decimal from a whole number like 5 − 2.35
- Choosing the quickest method, counting up, taking one off both, or setting it out in columns
- Decimals in real life, money totals, change from a note, perimeter, mass, and the legs of a journey
Your child works through this lesson on any screen. They click to reveal each step of a worked example, try the practice questions on paper, then click to check their own answer.
How it's structured:
- Each unit opens with a worked example your child clicks through one column at a time, then practice questions colour-coded easy, medium and hard
- 104 questions in total, each with a click-to-reveal answer and a reveal-all option
- A final 20-question mixed challenge pulling from all 6 units, the way decimals actually show up on an exam paper
Two shortcuts most worksheets skip. Taking 100 − 37.6 by columns means exchanging through two zeros, and that is where marks get lost. This lesson teaches your child to take one off both numbers first, so 100 − 37.6 becomes 99.9 − 37.5 and not a single column has to be exchanged. It also teaches when counting up beats counting back, and just as importantly when it does not.
Four interactive tools your child can play with. A place value board that starts with the numbers in the wrong columns and slides them into line one move at a time. A number line that works out whether counting up or counting back is quicker for those particular numbers, and says why. A board that turns a round number into a row of nines. And a cafe bill where your child builds an order, pays with a note, and counts the change up on the line.
Use this if:
- Your child is in Year 4 to Year 11 and lines decimals up on the right instead of on the point
- You're preparing for the 11+, where money and measurement questions are almost always decimals
- Your child is doing GCSE Foundation and loses marks on the arithmetic rather than the method
- You want a resource your child can check their own work with, not one more thing on your to-do list

Aadam, the tutor has a lovely mannerism and has made my daughter feel at ease. He explains the question in a way that she understands and is patient with her. She has already seen the results at school from his help and has gone up two GCSE grades in a short period of time.P. Flower · December 2024

FAQs
How do I access the lesson?
You'll get an email with your lesson link as soon as payment goes through. Click it to open the lesson in any browser, no login and no app to install.
How does the marking work?
There's no typing answers into a box. Your child works it out on paper, then clicks to reveal the correct answer and checks their own work. Full working is shown too, not just the final answer, so mistakes are easy to spot.
Does it work on a phone or tablet?
It works best on a tablet or laptop, where there's more room to read the examples and questions. It'll open on a phone too, but the text and diagrams can feel quite small on a smaller screen.
Can I use the lesson more than once?
Yes. There's no limit on how many times you open the link, so it's there for revision right up to the exam.
What if I lose the link or don't get the email?
