Worked Example
A laptop costs £480 including 20% VAT. What was the price before VAT?
- With VAT the price is 120% of the original, so divide by 1.2:480 ÷ 1.2 = 400
- The VAT part is the difference:480 − 400 = 80
Answer: £400 (VAT £80)
