    Worked Example

    A car travels 120 miles in 3 hours. Find its average speed.

    1. The triangle: distance on top, speed and time underneath
    2. Cover speed: what is left is distance over time
    3. speed = distance ÷ time = 120 ÷ 3 = 40

    Answer: 40 mph

    Try These Yourself

    A cyclist rides 45 km at 15 km/h. How long does it take?Show answerHide answer

    Answer: 3 hours

    time = distance ÷ speed = 45 ÷ 15.

    A metal has density 8 g/cm³ and volume 5 cm³. Find its mass.Show answerHide answer

    Answer: 40 g

    mass = density × volume = 8 × 5.

    A force of 60 N presses on an area of 4 m². Find the pressure.Show answerHide answer

    Answer: 15 N/m²

    pressure = force ÷ area = 60 ÷ 4.
