How the GCSE Maths Grade Boundary Tool Predicts Your Child's Real Grade

Most grade boundary tables are generic. Here's how our Grade Boundaries Tool lets you filter to the exact board, year and tier your child is sitting.

Most grade boundary information online is a static table from one year, one board, buried in a PDF. Our GCSE Maths Grade Boundaries Tool works differently, it lets you filter down to the exact board, year, and tier your child is actually sitting, so you're looking at the real number, not a rough average from a different exam entirely.

Why a generic boundary table isn't good enough

Grade boundaries aren't one national figure. They vary by exam board, they vary by tier, and they vary year to year depending on how difficult that particular set of papers turned out to be. A table showing "grade 5 boundary" without specifying which board and which year is close to meaningless for planning purposes, it might be off by 20 or 30 marks from what your child's actual exam requires.

That gap matters. A parent working from the wrong board's figures could believe their child needs significantly more, or fewer, marks than they actually do, and plan revision time around the wrong target entirely.

What the tool actually lets you filter

The tool has four filters that narrow the result down to something specific and usable. Board lets you select AQA, Edexcel, or OCR specifically, or view all boards together for a general sense of range. Year lets you check a specific past year or see the full available range. Period distinguishes between different exam series within a year. Tier splits results between Higher and Foundation, since the two have completely different grade structures.

There's also a toggle to show the results as a percentage rather than a raw mark count, useful for quickly sense-checking how close a mock score sits to a real boundary without doing the maths in your head.

What it actually shows once filtered

Once filtered, the tool displays each achievable grade for the selected tier alongside the marks needed, out of 240, and the equivalent percentage. Foundation shows grades 1 through 5. Higher shows grades 3 through 9. Because it pulls from actual exam board data rather than an estimate, you're seeing the real figure for that specific board and year, not an average that might not apply to your child's actual paper.

This is different to relying on national averages, which tend to blur together boards and years into a single rough figure. Our earlier posts on Foundation tier pass marks and Higher tier pass marks use averaged figures for that reason, useful as a general guide, but the tool itself is where to check the precise number that actually applies.

How to actually use it to predict a grade

The tool tells you the target, not automatically where your child currently sits against it. The way to connect the two is straightforward, take a recent mock or past paper score, filter the tool to the matching board, year, and tier, and see exactly which grade band that score falls into and how many marks separate it from the next grade up.

Done regularly, after every mock and past paper attempt, this turns a single score into a trend. You can watch whether your child is gaining ground on the next grade boundary over the course of a term, rather than only finding out where they stand once, at the real exam.

Getting more than the number

The tool shows what grade a score maps to. It doesn't show why marks were lost in the first place.

For that, our mock exam marking service marks the actual paper and returns feedback on precisely which questions and topics cost the marks, so you know not just the grade, but exactly what to fix to move up to the next one.

If you want help turning a mock result into an actual revision plan, book a free consultation and we'll talk through it.

Once the tool has told you the grade, the useful next step is fixing what produced it. Our Maths Mastery Lessons are organised by topic, so you can go straight to the ones the mock exposed, and a tutoring programmes covers it when that list is long.
