If your child is on Higher tier, "passing" means something different to Foundation, and the number of marks needed shifts a lot more steeply between grades. Here's how the real averages break down, and what actually determines where the boundary falls each year.
Higher tier covers a wider grade range
GCSE Maths Higher tier is marked out of 240, the same total as Foundation, but it covers grades 3 to 9 instead of 1 to 5. That wider range means the marks needed per grade step change more dramatically than on Foundation, and a small shift in performance can move your child across a grade boundary faster than it would on Foundation tier.
Because Higher tier reaches all the way to grade 9, it's the tier required for any student aiming for a 6 or above. But it also carries more risk at the bottom end, a student who's borderline for Foundation content can genuinely struggle on Higher and end up below a grade 4, whereas the same student would likely have passed comfortably on Foundation.
The real average marks needed, Higher tier
Averaging the June 2023, 2024 and 2025 series across AQA, Edexcel and Eduqas in our GCSE Maths Grade Boundaries Tool, here is where Higher tier boundaries have actually sat out of 240 marks:

Why only the last three years? Grading returned to pre-pandemic standards in summer 2023. Boundaries from 2020 to 2022 were unusually generous, so any average stretching back further reads lower than what your child will actually face.
These are still averages, not confirmed figures. The exact boundary shifts by board and by year depending on how that year's papers performed nationally. In June 2025 the grade 4 boundary was 63 out of 240 on AQA and 53 on Edexcel, a 10 mark spread in a single year. For the precise current number, the tool lets you filter by board, year and series rather than relying on an average. OCR papers are marked out of 300, so compare those on percentage rather than raw marks.
The gap between grades 4 and 5 is bigger than it looks
Notice the jump from grade 4 to grade 5, roughly 46 marks to 77 marks, a difference of around 31 marks. That's close to double, and it's a significant stretch. A student sitting right on the grade 4 or 5 line on Higher tier needs a genuinely solid revision plan rather than just topping up a few weak spots.
Compare that to Foundation tier, where the same standard pass sits at roughly 136 out of 240. A student capable of Foundation grade 4 comfortably is not automatically capable of Higher tier grade 4, the content itself is harder, not just the boundary. Should your child be on Higher tier at all?
This is worth asking honestly, not just assuming based on set or predicted grade. Higher tier makes grades 7 to 9 reachable, but it also makes a 3 the floor.
A student who's a genuine borderline grade 5 candidate needs to weigh the upside of reaching a 6 or 7 against the real risk of dropping below a 4 on a harder paper.
