11+ Fractions Help: Why Your Child Keeps Getting Stuck (And What Actually Works)

Fractions cause more 11+ tears than almost any other topic. Not because the maths is hard, but because most children never build the picture in their head that makes it make sense.
If your child freezes when they come across fraction questions, this is for you.
The real problem isn't the numbers
Ask a child what 3/4 means and most will say "three over four." Ask them to show you what it looks like, and the confusion starts. That gap between reciting a fraction and seeing one is where marks get lost.
Fractions questions in 11+ papers rarely test whether a child can identify a fraction. They test whether a child can reason with one, under time pressure, buried inside a word problem about sharing sweets, comparing distances, or splitting a pizza between friends. A child who has only ever practised fractions in isolation, on a worksheet, with no visual model, freezes the moment the question changes shape.
This is the pattern we see over and over, from families preparing for schools like Merchant Taylors', Queen Elizabeth's, and Heckmondwike Grammar. A child who "understands fractions" in a lesson still drops marks in a mock paper, because understanding a rule is not the same as being able to apply it under pressure or to different situations.

Why worksheets alone don't fix it
Worksheets are useful for repetition. They are not built to build understanding.
A worksheet shows a child a fraction problem and a blank space for the answer. It does not show them why the answer works, and it gives no feedback in the moment when they get it wrong. The child either gets it right by luck, or gets it wrong and moves on without knowing why. By the time a parent marks it that evening, the moment of confusion has already passed and nothing gets corrected in the child's head.
Research on retrieval practice backs up what tutors see daily. Children retain far more when they are made to reason through a concept actively, rather than passively copying a method from an example. A worksheet on its own does not force that reasoning. It just tests whether the reasoning happened somewhere else first.
The four fraction skills that trip children up
Most 11+ fraction marks are lost in four specific places, and they build on each other.

Recognising and comparing fractions. The starting point. If a child can't see 2/3 as bigger than 3/5 without a calculator, everything after this is shaky.
Adding and subtracting fractions. Common denominators trip up more children than any other single fraction skill, mostly because it's taught as a rule to memorise rather than something to see.
Multiplying and dividing fractions. This is where children who "know the rule" (multiply straight across, flip and multiply) but don't understand why, start guessing which rule applies to which question.
Fractions of amounts, and reverse fractions. The hardest of the four, and the one that shows up most in word problems. "3/5 of a number is 24, what is the number?" is a classic 11+ question type, and it needs the reverse-fraction skill specifically, not just fraction confidence in general.
Each of these is a distinct skill, and children rarely improve at all four just by doing mixed practice papers. They need focused, repeated practice on each one individually before mixing them together under exam conditions.
What actually closes the gap
Three things move the needle for 11+ fractions specifically.
Visual models before rules. The bar method shows a fraction as a physical share of something, not an abstract symbol. Once a child can see a fraction, comparing, adding, or simplifying it stops being a memorised rule and starts being obvious.
Immediate feedback. A child needs to know the moment they've gone wrong, and why, not three days later when a worksheet gets marked. Getting it wrong and immediately seeing the correct reasoning is what makes the concept stick.
Exam-style wording, from early on. 11+ fraction questions are rarely presented as bare sums. They're wrapped in context. Practising fractions only as bare sums leaves a child unprepared for the version that actually shows up on exam day.
