11+ Area and Volume Help: Why Your Child Keeps Getting Stuck (And What Actually Works)

Your child knows the formulas and still loses the marks. Here is why worksheets alone don't fix it, and what actually closes the gap on area, perimeter and volume.

Ask your child for the area of a rectangle and they will tell you instantly. Put an L-shape in front of them and the confidence disappears.

I'm Aadam, and I've taught measure to hundreds of 11+ and GCSE students at SHLC. This is the topic where knowing the formula is genuinely not the problem, which is why revising the formulas again does not help.

The real problem isn't the formulas

Since 2025 the formula sheet has been provided in GCSE exams, and most 11+ papers give the harder ones anyway. Your child does not need to memorise them. They still lose the marks.

Three things go wrong, and none of them are recall.

They cannot split the shape. A compound shape has to be broken into rectangles, or have a piece subtracted from it. Choosing where to cut is a decision, and it is never taught as one.

They cannot find the missing side. Compound shape questions deliberately leave one length off. Working it out means adding or subtracting the sides you do have. Children who miss this sit staring at a shape they think is unanswerable.

They mix up area and perimeter. Not because they do not know the difference, but because under time pressure they read the question quickly and answer the one they practised most.

Why worksheets alone don't fix it

A typical area worksheet gives your child ten rectangles, then ten triangles, then ten circles. Each block drills one formula. Your child gets most of them right and everyone concludes the topic is secure.

Then the exam gives them an L-shape with one side missing, and none of that practice applies, because the difficulty was never in the formula.

There is a second gap that worksheets cannot cover at all. Volume and surface area are three-dimensional, and a flat printed picture of a cuboid is genuinely hard for a child to read. Asked to count the faces of a see-through box drawn in outline, plenty of children count the ones they can see through as well.

The measure skills that trip children up, in order

These build on each other. A child struggling with surface area is often still shaky on step two.

1. Counting squares. Area on a grid, before any formula appears. This is what makes area mean something rather than being a rule about multiplying.

2. Area and perimeter of rectangles and triangles. Including the half in the triangle formula, which is the single most common dropped mark in the topic.

3. Finding a missing side when the area is given. Working backwards. This is the first point where the topic stops being mechanical.

4. Compound shapes. Splitting into rectangles, subtracting a hole, and finding the missing lengths around the outside.

5. Perimeter of compound shapes. Different from area and harder, because your child has to walk the whole outline without missing or double-counting a side.

6. Trapezia. The formula everyone forgets, and the one where the two parallel sides get confused with the height.

7. Volume of prisms and cylinders. Cross-section times length. Once a child sees volume this way rather than as separate formulas, most of the topic collapses into one idea.

8. Surface area. Faces in pairs, nets, and finding a missing dimension. Consistently the lowest-scoring part of the topic.

What actually closes the gap

Make them label the diagram first. Before any calculation, every known length written on the shape, and a question mark on the one they need. Most missing-side questions solve themselves the moment the diagram is fully labelled.

Teach splitting as its own skill. Give your child compound shapes and ask only where they would cut. No calculating. Two lines drawn on ten different shapes teaches more than five full solutions.

Make 3D shapes solid, not see-through. A cuboid drawn filled in, where the faces your child can see are the ones they should count, removes an enormous amount of confusion that has nothing to do with maths.

Say the units out loud. Centimetres for perimeter, centimetres squared for area, centimetres cubed for volume. Saying it while writing the answer stops the most common single-mark loss in the whole topic.

What to do this week

Draw an L-shape on paper. Label three sides and leave one off. Hand it to your child.

Do not ask for the area. Ask two things instead: where would you cut this shape, and what is the missing length? If they can answer those two, the arithmetic that follows is the easy part. If they cannot, you have found the gap, and it is a much narrower gap than the whole topic.

Then ask them for the units on their answer before they write it down.
