Volume and Surface Area Calculator

Work out the volume of cuboids, cylinders, spheres, cones and triangular prisms, with surface area wherever the shape gives enough information. The formula comes first, then the substitution, then the answer in cubed units. Cone surface areas even show the slant height being found with Pythagoras on the way.

    Worked Example

A cuboid measures 2 cm by 3 cm by 4 cm. Find its volume and surface area.

    1. Volume = length × width × height = 2 × 3 × 4 = 24 cm³
    2. The three different faces have areas 2×3 = 6, 2×4 = 8 and 3×4 = 12
    3. Surface area = 2 × (6 + 8 + 12) = 2 × 26 = 52 cm²

Answer: Volume 24 cm³, surface area 52 cm²

    Try These Yourself

Find the volume of a cylinder with radius 3 cm and height 5 cm, to 1 decimal place.Show answerHide answer

    Answer: 141.4 cm³

    π × 3² × 5 = 45π ≈ 141.4.

Find the volume of a triangular prism: triangle base 6 cm, height 4 cm, length 10 cm.Show answerHide answer

    Answer: 120 cm³

    Cross-section ½ × 6 × 4 = 12, then 12 × 10.

A cube has volume 64 cm³. How long is each edge?Show answerHide answer

    Answer: 4 cm
