Why Does My Child Understand Fractions in Lessons but Fail Them in Tests?

This is one of the most common things parents say to us. "They get it when we go through it together, but the test comes back and they've dropped half the marks." It's confusing, and it feels like it doesn't add up.

It does add up, and there's a specific reason behind it.

The gap has a name

Psychologists call it the illusion of fluency.

When a child watches you work through a fraction problem, or reads through a worked example, the steps feel familiar and easy to follow. That familiarity gets mistaken for understanding.

The child walks away thinking "I've got this," when really they've only followed someone else's reasoning, not built their own.

The test is a different situation entirely. No one is there to prompt the next step. No worked example to lean on. The child has to retrieve the method from memory, apply it to a question phrased differently from the one they practised, and do it under time pressure. That's a much harder task than following along, and it's where the cracks show.

This isn't a motivation problem, and it isn't a sign your child is bad at maths. It's a predictable outcome of how the practice was structured.

Three reasons this happens specifically with fractions

Fractions are taught as steps, not as something to see. A child can memorise "find the common denominator, then add the numerators" without ever picturing what a fraction actually represents. That works fine for a question that looks exactly like the example. It falls apart the moment the wording changes.

Guided practice hides the struggle. When a parent or tutor is present, they naturally nudge a stuck child in the right direction, a hint here, a rephrased question there. That help is well-meant, but it means the child never experiences the moment of being properly stuck and having to work through it alone. Tests don't offer that support.

Lessons rarely mirror exam wording. Most fraction teaching happens with bare sums. Real 11+ questions wrap fractions inside word problems, "a third of the sweets were red, how many were blue if there were 24 in total."

A child who's only practised the bare version has to do two things at once in the test, decode the wording and apply the method, and that split focus is often where marks are lost.

How to actually close the gap

Test recall, not recognition. After going through a fraction concept, close the book and ask your child to do a similar question completely on their own, no prompts, no hints. If they can't, they haven't learned it yet, they've only followed it.

Get comfortable with them struggling. A child stuck on a question for a minute or two, working it out without help, is doing more useful learning than ten questions solved with guidance. This feels uncomfortable to watch. It's the part that actually builds the skill.

Practise the exam version from early on. Don't wait until a few weeks before the test to introduce word-problem-style fraction questions. Build them in from the start, so the format itself stops being a source of extra difficulty.

Get feedback in the moment, not after the fact. A child who gets something wrong needs to know immediately, while the question is still fresh, not three days later when a worksheet comes back marked. That immediate correction is what stops the same mistake repeating in the next test.

Sit your child down with one fraction word problem, the kind with a story wrapped around it rather than a bare sum, and leave the room.

No hints, no hovering. If they solve it correctly and can explain why, the understanding is real. If they freeze or get it wrong, it's a sign exactly where to focus next.
