10 Ways to Help Your Child Excel in Maths
Most of what helps your child at maths has nothing to do with you teaching them algebra. Ten things that genuinely move the needle, from an experienced maths teacher.
Parents often ask me what they can do at home to support their child's maths. The honest answer is: quite a lot, and most of it has nothing to do with sitting down and teaching them algebra.
The biggest factors in how well a child does in maths aren't just about what happens in the classroom or tutoring session. They're about the environment at home, the habits built over time, and the attitude your child develops towards difficulty. Here's what actually makes a difference.
1. Start early and keep it low pressure
You don't need worksheets or formal lessons to build a strong mathematical foundation in young children. Counting objects around the house, spotting shapes on a walk, noticing patterns, comparing sizes. These everyday interactions introduce mathematical thinking long before it looks anything like "maths."
The goal at this stage isn't to accelerate. It's to make numbers feel familiar and unthreatening before school does its best to convince some children they're not maths people.
2. Bring maths into everyday life
One of the most common things I hear from students is that they don't see the point of maths. The best counter to that isn't a motivational speech. It's showing them, regularly, that maths is embedded in things they already do.
Let them work out the change when you're paying for something. Ask them to estimate how long a journey will take. Involve them in measuring ingredients when you're cooking. None of this needs to be made into a lesson. Just let them see maths being used, naturally, as part of normal life.
3. Encourage questions over answers
There's a tendency, especially as exams approach, for the focus to narrow entirely onto getting the right answer. But children who ask good questions learn faster than children who just try to memorise correct methods.
If your child is stuck on something, try asking "what do you already know that might help?" before jumping to the explanation. The habit of thinking before giving up is one of the most valuable things you can help build, and it transfers well beyond maths.
4. Treat mistakes as information, not failure
This one is straightforward in theory and genuinely difficult in practice, especially when GCSE results feel high stakes. But a child who is afraid of being wrong will avoid attempting things they're not already sure about. In maths, where almost every topic requires you to try something before you fully understand it, that fear is crippling.
When your child gets something wrong, the most useful question is "what do you think went wrong there?" Not "why didn't you get that right?" The first is curious. The second is a verdict.
5. Build a consistent routine rather than cramming sessions
Short, regular practice beats occasional long sessions every time. The research on this is clear: spreading revision out over time leads to far better retention than massing it into one sitting. For younger children preparing for 11+, twenty minutes a day of focused practice will do more than a two-hour session once a week. For GCSE students, revisiting topics regularly rather than spending a week on one area and moving on is what makes knowledge stick.

6. Use the right resources
There's no shortage of maths resources online, and most of them are free. The ones I point families towards most often are Corbett Maths and Maths Genie, both of which are well aligned to the UK curriculum and cover everything from basic number work through to GCSE higher tier content. They include video explanations, worked examples, and practice questions with answers.

7. Connect maths to what your child already cares about
Every child has interests, and almost every interest has maths hiding inside it. Football involves statistics, probability, and geometry. Music involves rhythm, pattern, and fractions. Gaming involves logic, coordinates, and rapid mental calculation. Art involves proportion, symmetry, and scale.
You don't need to turn any of this into a formal exercise. Just pointing out the connection occasionally is enough to shift how your child relates to the subject. Maths stops being something that happens in a classroom and starts being something that shows up everywhere.
8. Praise effort and process, not just results
Research consistently shows that children who are praised for being clever become more risk-averse over time. When their identity is tied to being good at something, failure threatens that identity. Children praised for effort and persistence, on the other hand, tend to engage more readily with difficult material because the process itself is where the value sits.
"You kept going even when that was hard" is more useful long-term than "you're so good at maths." It sounds like a small distinction but it shapes how your child responds to the next difficult thing they encounter.
9. Know when to bring in extra help
There's a point where encouragement and good resources aren't enough on their own, and recognising it early is important. If your child has specific gaps that aren't shifting, if anxiety is getting in the way, or if an important exam is approaching and progress has stalled, one-to-one support is worth considering.
In my experience, the students who struggle most aren't always the ones with the weakest foundations. They're often the ones who've fallen behind on one specific concept that everything else is built on, and nobody has identified it yet. Once that gap is found and addressed, progress can be surprisingly quick.

10. Model a healthy attitude towards difficulty
Children notice how adults respond to things being hard. If maths comes up at home and the response is dismissive ("I was never any good at that either"), it quietly signals that struggling with maths is a personality trait rather than a temporary state to work through.
You don't need to pretend to enjoy algebra. But showing your child that you engage with difficult things, that you look things up when you don't know them, that you're willing to try and get it wrong, models exactly the attitude you want them to have towards their own learning.
The goal isn't to raise a child who finds maths easy. It's to raise one who doesn't give up when it gets hard. That's a mindset, and like most mindsets, it starts at home.
