External Mock Exam Marking for Schools Across the UK
Your students have sat their mocks. Now you need them marked accurately, returned on time, and done without dumping the workload on your department.
That's what we do.
SHLC provides bulk mock exam marking for schools across all GCSE subjects. Every paper is marked by a qualified teacher with subject-specific expertise. Not a teaching assistant. Not an automated system. Real teachers applying real mark schemes.
We've worked with schools on tight data input deadlines, across multiple subjects, with papers arriving in batches. We know how it works and we keep things straightforward.
What We Mark
We cover all GCSE subjects across all major UK exam boards including AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas and Cambridge IGCSE. Maths, English, Sciences, RE, History, Geography, Business, Economics and more. If you're not sure whether we can cover your subject, just ask and we'll confirm quickly.
One thing worth knowing: some papers have multiple components or booklets sat together as one exam. Just let us know the paper codes when you get in touch and we'll make sure everything is priced and counted correctly.
Who This Is For
This service works well for subject leads and heads of year who need results back before data deadlines, exam coordinators managing papers across multiple classes, and SLT looking for reliable external marking without the internal pressure. If you've got papers sitting in a pile and a deadline coming, get in touch.
How It Works
Get in touch via WhatsApp or email with your details and we'll come back to you with a clear quote and confirmed turnaround. No hidden fees. Once agreed, you send us the papers by post or as scanned digital files and we'll get them back to you by your deadline with scores and feedback ready to feed into your data systems.
To get your quote sorted quickly, include your subject and exam board, the number of papers and whether any have multiple booklets, whether you need original papers returned or scores only, your deadline, and your name, school name and contact email.
Why Schools Use Us
Every marker is a qualified UK teacher with subject-specific experience. Many have current or recent examiner experience with the major boards. You deal directly with us throughout, not an automated system. We work to your deadline and we're upfront if something isn't feasible. One point of contact across all your subjects, whether you're sending 20 papers or 200.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the minimum number of papers for a bulk order? The minimum for bulk school pricing is 20 papers. If you have fewer than 20, you're still welcome to use our individual marking service for students and parents at the standard per-paper rate. You can find those plans at our Mark a Mock page.
How does payment work for schools? We agree payment terms when the order is confirmed. In most cases we ask for 50% upfront before marking begins, with the remaining balance on completion. We accept purchase orders and can invoice accordingly to fit your school's process.
Can you mark papers from any exam board? Yes. We cover all major UK exam boards including AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas and Cambridge IGCSE across all GCSE subjects.
What if our paper has multiple booklets or components? Some papers, like certain RE or Science specs, are sat as two separate booklets within one exam session. Just include the paper codes when you get in touch and we'll make sure everything is counted and priced correctly.
Do we get the original papers back? If original papers need returning to your school, we send them back using Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed, the highest level of tracked delivery service available, with next working day delivery by 1pm, signature required and up to £2,500 compensation cover.
Can you mark papers from multiple subjects in one order? Yes. If your school is running mocks across several departments at the same time, we can handle multiple subjects through one point of contact. Just include all the details when you get in touch.
Who marks the papers? Every paper is marked by a qualified UK teacher with subject-specific expertise. Many of our markers have current or recent examiner experience with the major boards. No teaching assistants, no automated marking.
How long does marking take? Turnaround depends on volume and subject. Once you get in touch with your details, we'll confirm a realistic deadline before anything is agreed. We don't commit to timelines we can't meet.
Can we send papers in batches? Yes. If your students are sitting papers across different days or your departments are ready at different times, you can send them in batches as they come in. Just let us know when you get in touch so we can plan the marking schedule around your timeline.
Can papers be sent digitally or does it have to be by post? Both work and we are happy either way. As a general guide, if you are sending 30 or more papers, posting is usually easier than scanning a large batch. For smaller numbers, scanning works well and gets marking started sooner. Ultimately it is up to you and we will work with whichever method suits your school.
What postal service should we use to send papers? If you're posting original scripts, please use Royal Mail Special Delivery Guaranteed. This is their highest level of tracked service, guaranteeing next working day delivery by 1pm with a signature required on arrival and up to £2,500 compensation cover. It protects your students' original work and gives you proof of delivery. Please do not use standard or untracked post for original exam papers.
Can we use you throughout the year? Yes, we mark papers all year round. Whether you run mocks in November, January, March or any other point in the academic year, we're available. Some schools use us for every mock series they run and we're happy to build that into an ongoing arrangement.
Can we see a sample before committing to a large order? Yes. If you want to check the quality of marking and feedback before sending a full batch, you can submit a single paper at a discounted rate of £25. This gives you a clear picture of what your school will receive before you commit to a larger order.
Are you able to provide QLA (Question Level Analysis)? We offer straightforward marking and scores as standard for school bulk orders. If you need QLA, mention it when you enquire and we'll let you know what's possible.
What do you need from us to get started? Just get in touch with your subject and exam board, number of papers and whether any have multiple components, your deadline, whether you need papers returned or scores only, and your school name and contact email. We'll take it from there.
Can you mark papers for multiple year groups or sets in one order? Yes. If you're sending Year 10 and Year 11 papers at the same time, or papers from different sets across the same year group, that's no problem. Just make sure the papers are clearly labelled with the year group and set when you send them and we'll keep everything organised at our end.

- Your deadline, whether that is a data input date or a date you need papers back in students' hands
