Medly AI vs SHLC: Which Actually Helps You Pass GCSE Maths?
If you've been searching for GCSE maths help, you've probably seen Medly AI advertised heavily, promising personalised learning, instant marking, and grade improvements backed by research. We reviewed it in detail already. This post is about the practical question parents actually ask next, which one should my child actually use.
What Medly AI promises
Medly markets itself around AI-powered personalised learning, exam board-specific content for AQA, Edexcel, and OCR, intelligent marking with instant feedback, and predicted exam papers. It costs around £25 a month, or £100+ on an annual plan, and runs frequent discount promotions to bring that price down.
On paper, that's an appealing pitch. In practice, our full Medly AI review found the execution doesn't match the marketing.
Where Medly actually falls short
We submitted the same essay to Medly's marking system multiple times. It scored anywhere from 27/35 to 35/35 depending on when it was submitted, the same piece of work, wildly different marks. That isn't a small inconsistency. For a service built on the promise of accurate, instant feedback, a marking system a child can't trust isn't doing its job.
We also found content misalignment throughout the app. A-Level topics turning up in GCSE sections, and topics explicitly listed as "not assessed" still appearing in practice material. A child working through mismatched content doesn't know it's mismatched. They just revise the wrong thing and find out too late.
The AI tutor itself struggled to go beyond a single question when compared side by side with free tools like ChatGPT, and couldn't reliably generate further practice material on demand. On top of that, users reported laggy writing features, loading issues, and missing data in tables, the kind of technical friction that adds up over a revision session.
Why this matters for the decision, not just the review
None of this makes Medly useless as a supplementary tool.
It means treating it as a primary source for marking accuracy or content coverage is risky, especially in the run-up to exams when there's no time to unlearn something revised incorrectly.
The core issue is that AI marking and AI-generated content still need a layer of human accuracy behind them, someone checking that what's being taught actually matches what will be examined, and that feedback given to a child is consistent and correct every time.
